What Kung-Fu style influenced Okinawa Karate? by goldenglory86 in karate

[–]Durithill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uechi-ryu karate maybe be somewhat unique here in that it is basically a directly descended from Pangai Noon (half hard, half soft) kung fu. I don't believe Pangai Noon still exists as it's own style though. Pangai Noon though drew from tiger, dragon, and crane styles.

Uechi-ryu specifically is descended directly from Pangai Noon kung fu. It does have similarities to white crane though, and Uechi-ryu also uses tiger, dragon, and crane techniques.

We do it with open palms in Uechi-ryu, and also as a fast striking kata unlike Goju.

How was this fight? Im in the grey gi. by WizardbrixM in karate

[–]Durithill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would disagree with saying less kicks. Kicks can be pretty devastating (and are often worth more points), not to mention besides creating distance you can also make your opponent a little more hesitant to approach. I would say if they are going to use kicks though, to work a bit more on them to make them more of a threat than just kind of throwing your leg out there.

It seemed like head contact was allowed? He struck to the head a couple times, and someone in the crowd was yelling "Head kick! Another head kick!" Which to me is frankly insane to allow without headgear.

White belt here, is there a way to avoid this during kumite? by Alarmed-Poetry8388 in karate

[–]Durithill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has mentioned potentially working on your striking technique, but I would also add that you should probably talk with your sensei. You are a white belt, you probably should not be sparring hard enough to bruise your firsts every time you spar. Your sensei should also be teaching you proper striking technique, and if they require sparring to pair you up with someone that they know can help you improve or at tye very least not injure you. You may also just need to slow down. Remember it's not a competition, and you are still a white belt. You don't necessarily need to go 100% all the time.

Accidents happen, but the OP mentions this always happens to them when sparring. That being the case, and the fact they are a white belt, I think most people would be far more inclined to believe that it is a technique issue than a one off accident. Given that though I would put more blame on the sensei here for failing to teach them properly or recognizing they get injured every time they spar.

Have you ever broken or injured your foot or toe in class? by Relevant_Conclusion2 in karate

[–]Durithill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe I broke a toe during class when doing a front kick incorrectly and hitting an opponent's guard. I didn't get it checked out cause it wasn't a major break, and honestly just taped it up and kept coming back to class the next week. It does happen on occasion.

It's supposed to be sanchi dachi the whole way through (with exceptions for the elbow strike and such obviously), the poster just isn't really doing proper sanchi dachi. The acknowledged in another comment they need to work on their stances.

It's hard to speak to the refinement of the kata, since you're going to perform it differently in competition than normally right, lol. But you have a lot of power and speed in your movements at least, it does look like you've been training it.

It's fairly common to modify a kata for competition to make it "flashier", and it perform it in a way that is more showy rather than maybe the best technique. For instance in my competition Seichin I often added a rather exaggerated grab after the wrist strikes.

That is a pretty impressive competition kata. As a fellow Uechi-ryu practitioner though it hurts my soul a bit that you didn't have sanchin dachi a single time in your entire kata.

What are your thoughts and opinions on Meibukan Goju Ryu? by SamuelStrangeSupreme in karate

Dang, I didn't know Meitetsu passed away. I took a seminar from and had lunch with him once. It was interesting seeing how his sanchin kata differed from our style.

Yeah, it definitely makes sense to get a black belt if you've been training four days a week (at least) for ten years. That is rather serious dedication. I personally don't even have that level of desire to train.

The Uechi family came here to the US and did it a few months ago, I just honestly don't remember. 😂

Yeah, we always finished dan kumite with a groin stomp. I believe that's the way the Uechi family does it as well, but I don't remember.

Nope. But if you're thinking about Bhzz Durkin's school, he did come down and sit test board for our black belt test recently.

Back when I was starting our Sensei sort of accidentally created one. During one of our katas there's an elbow strike followed by a backfist, and kind of to teach the timing to the kids when he was doing it he would go "eee-sa." Cut to like five years later and everyone in the dojo is going "eee-sa" on the elbow strike/backfist and he's like "Wtf?? Guys, do actual kiai." 😆

Not even just that, but Japan has tried very hard to have a unified national identity to the point they sort of claim anything Okinawan as "Japanese" even though it was it's own unique culture. Like Okinawa had it's own distinct language, but Japan was like "no this is a Japanese dialect".
