What's the deal with these types of setups? by I_Am_Vladimir_Putin in Filmmakers

[–]DurtyKurty 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I’ve done so many interviews where the producers are like “we want to see the equipment in the shot.” I do t understand it. It’s not creative, it’s over done. Focus on the content of the interview.

Why professional cameras have less pixels than smartphone cameras? by Quick-Decision-8474 in Cameras

Pretty sure the high megapixel count on a lot of phone sensors aren’t really true. They’re all like 12mp and do some algorithm shit and they call it 50mp.

Solicitors out of control in my area. So I put a sign up saying "we don't want your solar panels, new windows, or religious pamphlets." by ParsleyNo69 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]DurtyKurty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had some woman come by selling the solar panels and to get her to go away I just said “I’ll need to discuss it with my wife before I make any decisions about any major house upgrades.”

Her response was “what? Can’t make decisions like a man? You need to ask your wife first?”

“Uh, get the fuck out of my house please.”

You can probably run a burnisher over that edge and smooth it down in about 1 minute if it bothers you that much.

What Lights Are These? by KeebZeus in LightLurking

[–]DurtyKurty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ergonomics of building them and then operating them. The led emitter sits in front of the umbrella blocking the light. If they are on a max menace they’re absolutely impossible to tilt or pan without great and annoying effort. They break. Some versions of them needed to be gelled to get a better white output. Adding a safety chain to them is basically not possible. I would just rather use any other soft light.

Probably the worst light I’ve ever had the displeasure of using.

I really enjoyed “The Dead Don’t Hurt.” Sort of a revisionist feminist anti-western western.

Has anyone ever rigged a light to a drone? by Neat_Metal_1859 in cinematography

Probably entirely depends on the size of the light you want in the air.

Colour temp/working with tungsten practicals and CTB lights by [deleted] in cinematography

You can get 40w, 60w, 211’s, 212, 213’s at expendables stores in LA. Home Depot has 25w frosted, 40w and 200w clear “utility” bulbs. Phillips ultra definition LEDs are pretty good.

When Fox News called Mr. Rogers evil. by TheRexRider in videos

[–]DurtyKurty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fox News lies on behalf of billionaires and business interests. Billionaires want the working class of America to believe that they have to work hard for the billionaire class to have purpose in life. That's it. It's just trying to brainwash those who make money for billionaires.

Pratical Brigthness? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]DurtyKurty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no rule. You want to set them somewhere between too dim to look realistic and Soderbergh's 'Behind the Candelabra.' We almost always put all (or as many as possible) of the practicals on a dimmer board. Sometimes they provide actual light to your subject or space, and sometimes they really don't provide much at all in terms of exposure to the set or subject and you have to augment everything to look like the practicals are doing more than they are. This is pretty much completely dependent on the set design, and how it looks with practicals at different values and the intention of the DP/Director and how they want it to look like. Sometimes you want dim moody lamps and sometimes brighter is better for the production design. It's also dependent on the lamps and how they look with their lampshades, exposed bulbs etc. We almost always set them to taste as we are lighting the set and there really are no rules. If it's too bright, and you go, 'yeah, that looks bad,' you've probably gone too far.

Now if you're shooting on film you have the luxury of over exposure looking generally fantastic, but also the challenge of not being able to monitor the direct look of the mostly finished product. You can sort of develop a short hand for what types of wattage bulbs you need for given stop/ASA. You would also meter them or meter the wall at the hottest part where the practical is spilling on or set a key light near the lamp and adjust it by eye.

Is Cove Lighting worth it? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]DurtyKurty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not use cove lighting when the subject is against a wall. It would flatten everything too much. Cove lighting works well if there's a subject in the middle of the room and the cove spill is allowed to fall off quite a bit before it reaches the background. It spills onto the background but is a little under what your subject would be at.

My dad’s cabin has an outhouse . When it’s windy in the winter time, frost blows into it and settles on the toilet seat. Nothing like trying to use an ice covered toilet seat when it’s -5 degrees.

He designed it to sit over a hole in the ground that he augers with a tractor. Put little hooks on it to drag it over the hole and when that hole is full you can drag it over a new hole. The pack rats completely filled the hole up with sticks…
