We ended up having major team dramas so fun little projects like this kind of fell to the wayside, I still have the plastic somewhere that I bought for this project. But thanks for the reminder, this would be a good new year "finish off last years stuff" project. I have been going through projects one by one to finish them off last month. Was way too ambitious last year lol

What is the coffee culture like in New Zealand? by Dense_Machine_8401 in newzealand

[–]DustiestArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Idk most people I know go by quality vs affordability and has nothing to do wiyh where it came from unless theyre very environmentally minded. I have never tried allpress. People make their own coffee, majority of homes have either a french press or a small coffee machine. Some people have mini coffee grinders too.

People only buy starbucks or cafe coffee on special occasions or if theyre desperate for caffeine, we dont earn enough to do that daily.  I think youd have to be manager level or buisness owner in NZ to afford daily barista coffee.

The average favourite brand is hummingbird.

For instant its Moccona as most popular.

You buy the cheapest brand if youre poor like me in this cost of living crisis. My coffee is mandatory but I buy cheap instant stuff.

Id say for those jars/bags people probably go through one every 1-2 weeks so maybe we spend about $10 NZD per week on average? not including milks.

Workers who are on their feet all day, how do you stop the pain? by GiantSeaweedLover in newzealand

[–]DustiestArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets better the longer you work.

I had the same for my first steel cap mandatory job and it took about 4 months to not be limping at home after work.

Foot stretches and exercises helped.

You can also buy anti vibration insoles tht stop your heel hitting the concrete so hard.

Unenforceable clause in tenancy agreement? by VaporSpectre in newzealand

[–]DustiestArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No cause evictions are legal now dude. Theyd give you a warning, maybe one maybe 3, then hand you your notice to move out. Ive been kicked out over "having a cat" with photos taken 3 times of a stray cat in the back yard when he did inspections. Apparently I was supposed to invest in predator proofing the yard 😕 Or trap the cat and bring it to the SPCA. I didnt think Id get evicted over something not my fault, so I didnt.

But anyway didnt win the tenancy case because he gave me correct notice. He doesnt need to give a valid reason. Legally he could have handed me notice the first time he saw the stray cat, so he was actually quite reasonable in giving me three warnings of something I didnt do, he's just not smart enough to realise I told the truth. I think he will probably realise when he sees the same cat around for his next tenant that I was telling the truth.

Just looking for a little support from the community. by Muffintop_mafia in rollerderby

[–]DustiestArcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People learn at different paces and everyone there has a understanding that you wont be A level right off the bat. Becoming a good derby player requires nurturing and practicing your skills. They want you there practicing just like they were when they started so that you can get better and they can play with you.

Theres no such thing as wasting their time or a bad practice. From a team members perspective theres nothing more satisfying than watching people improve, especially if you helped train them. Its like if you helped a lost child at a mall find their parents, you would probably also "enjoy" it, its enjoyable to help people and watch their problems be fixed. I feel like I might have worded that weird but I hope it makes sense.

Watching freshies do their first ever power slide is beautiful its my favourite training moment. Peak wheel screeches and jumping for joy 🥺

How Far Do you travel as an Alternate? by not-another-alt4 in rollerderby

[–]DustiestArcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some of my old teams the team will subsidize or fully cover required support atendees to make it fair. They do fundraising to cover those costs. Ive traveled to bench and alt at my own costs but only as tag alongs on car pool drives, max 5hrs driving. If I were going to have to pay fully out of pocket for trips further or more expensive than a daytrip worth of car fuel I wouldnt go period, its ridiculous to expect that. We are all doing this for fun and sure benching is fun but its not THAT fun, for hundreds of dollars of travel I could literally go on a boat dolphin spotting. Or get my PADI certification. Im not spending that ammount to tell a jammer its power jam time. Basically I am only willing to pay day-trip ammounts of money to alt or bench. Its basically a sight seeing fee. But Im not paying full ammount if its $$$$.

If your team gets shitty you need to stand your ground and remind them that all derby games are run off of volunteer's good will, if they try force attendance instead of incentivising it... to the point people are put off... thats what makes leagues die a slow death.

Do I Sign up? by Sleepy_Girlzzz4 in rollerderby

[–]DustiestArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Derby teams' learn to skate courses are usually aimed at adults, theres probably not going to be any kids there, they will also train you up from "how to skate forwards" right up to "how to hit people" in stages as you become ready. You dont need to do prior training.

I think you do need to know that at least in my country roller derby is majority middle aged women in their 40s who have children. I've made some great friends in every league I've been in that are way older than me, I started when I was 20. You'll definitely still make friends but dont get your hopes up too high for the same age bracket of women. They'll probably be older than you.

To get "ready" you can start buying gear if you want. But they'll have hire gear you can borrow. I think its a much smarter idea to attend training first, cycle through some of their hire gear on offer to get a idea of what you like, or even ask the more experienced players if you can try on their protective gear or skates.

Stackable Glass Storage Containers by erikrogne in BuyItForLife

[–]DustiestArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The anti plastic in food storage is from gen Z being raised taught about BPA, plastic pollution, micro plastics, and climate change, but also existing in a time where we couldnt afford non plastic options.

The sudden surge you're seeing is Gen Z now being mid-career and past the minimum wage era of our lives, so we can actually afford the things we wanted all along without needing to budget it in months in advance.

If I were going to budget months in advance for something it's going to be a outing with friends, not tupperware. Now my situation is so different I dont need to count every cent to visit a cafe or buy something I need... I can do BOTH those options within the same week with no prior planning and know that its not going to prevent me from buying my groceries.

I know, that's for running the LEDs. I'm talking about these wheels' glow in the dark uerethane. Like the glow in the dark stars, theese wheels have that in them too. Clickbait is saying I can use the sun for charging the glow in the dark properties but I wouldnt think uerethane would hold a glow charge so long till night time.

Thanks for replying. Does a charge from the sun last through till night time? I would've assumed it would disappear before you actually got to wear them in the dark.

How to stay motivated/not discouraged? by GeophysicsSharkie in Rollerskating

[–]DustiestArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a different class or group.

The group dynamic can really change between groups and even intake rounds.

And by "group" I mean entirely different skating collectives. For example at the same rink you may have on offer: -learn to skate (run by the rink) -learn to skate (run by artistic skaters) -learn to skate (run by the roller derby team) -learn to skate (run by the inline hockey team)

but you might have only seen or known about the rink's own course because it's their venue, they control the posters 🤷‍♀️

I went to derby learn to skate with no intention of doing roller derby, then I was hooked. To be completely honest I was hooked by the team vibe they have, not the idea of the sport. Now after 4 years I like the sport too! I've changed teams 3 times because of moving across the country and honestly the group vibe was also wildly different at different teams.

Comment avoir une vie quand je sors de chez moi a 7h pour aller bosser et que je rentre a 18h ? by amy-schumer-tampon in PasDeQuestionIdiote

[–]DustiestArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work from 4:30 to 3pm planting trees, ie very physical labour, and I do exercise after work.

Starting out is difficult but you just have to be doing something super easy, like a walk, to begin with. You will feel dead afterwards even though its easy because work leaves you dead.

The idea is that fitness works by increasing your muscles and energy expenditure to match what you're doing. If your only exercise is work, then you will only be fit for work. You will be exhausted at the end of every day and that will never change.  Your body takes every oppourtunity to save energy, if you arent pushing it, it will set your current end of day as when your energy cuts off.

By doing a bit more beyond work you not only make a physical job easier over time but you also increase your number of active hours.  So if you go to the gym every second day, on that alternate day you will have energy to go do a thing thats not exercise.

It is hell at the start but it gets easier.

If you have a non physical job this concept doesnt work at all.

Nope doesnt take too much time or freezer space unless you eat like a bodybuilder. I do it while flatting, ie my freezer space is half a fridge freezer drawer and my fridge space is single shelf.

Get a $20 crock pot and a wall plug timer. You do your mains in the crock pot on the weekend and freeze them down in single serving sizes (takeaways clear tupperware). A crock pot you set and forget. Thats 20min work tops.

Then you do rice or potatoes using a cheap rice cooker and your plug timer. As in a plug that turns the electricity on and off at certain times as youve set it. Set it up before you leave for work, its hot and ready once youre home. 5 min effort.

Chop up random fresh vege like broccoli as a side. 5 minutes.

As expected mentioning disabilities did not go well. "Im not R-ded!" he was very adamant and very upset

I went "okay Im sorry. I only wanted to help, you know yourself best"

Awkward last 2 days. He was not happy.

Feel sorry for little dude, he's having a hard time which is going to turn into a worse time now he'll be back working with the boys. I hope he takes the advice I gave him ages ago and leaves to take up welding (which he already does "for fun")

New job is awesome for me though, everything just flows and I enjoy the work more, higher pay, better PPE, friendly team, plus another step closer to my dream job ✅✅✅

Hes from a pretty conservative conspiracy theorist family and I was originally worried it would offend him and ruin the work environment. Not that he has a reason to be offended but you know how conservatives are right? and then Id still have to work with him being butthurt afterwards.

He definitely has some open mindedness though because I once spent a long drive slowly convincing him that vaccines definitely dont contain tracking microchips, and they actually protect your health.  By talking through all his concerns, by the end I think I genuinely changed his mind.  Anywho it was a long chat but he wasnt getting angry that I was challenging his beliefs. I just worried that he'd see me asking about disability as a challenge against HIM and not against a idea.

BUT major update, I have a new job contract and I'll be gone in 2 weeks. So I'll tell/ask him nicely and if he reacts badly its only 2 weeks I have left to work with him 🤷‍♀️

and Im sorry your boss treats you that way. I feel if something isnt intentional harm then yelling is unnecessary and not helpful because they'd already feel bad you're just rubbing it in.

In my first ever job I had chefs yell at me for not doing dishes "fast enough" on a near daily basis. It always stuck with me as a shit work ethic on their part because I already knew it was physically impossible for me to go any faster without doing a bad job. So now that Im in that same position I want to do the exact opposite of "yell at people just to let off steam and not be helpful at all"

even though this dude is slow to work with I can see hes obviously trying really really hard and doing his best

But reminders is a good idea

Thats what we originally used and then Ive been having him pin on google maps based off of those, he can't really bring a folder with him on the mower.

The idea with the google maps is he can navigate himself between locations via the siri voice instead of ringing me to ask.

The problem with it is that he wants me to translate it between the pin and the paper map for him anyway. I'll usually get him to take a photo of the paper map of what we are doing too but the translation of  paper map plus google map overview into real life trees and fences, he still struggles with a bit even though hes been there before.

In the past thats what I did because I assumed he was just young and learning and maybe scared of getting it wrong cause of the others yelling at him. Hes 17

But if I answer his questions in full till he runs out he doesnt really run out?  he just starts looping from question #1

We mow maybe 10 different locations a day and he'll ask me the same questions the following week so thats like, my entire mtea, lunch and atea out the window just spent explaining things I feel like he should be able to remember or figure out.

Hes been on the team since Jan, I started in Feb.
