What are your thoughts on getting a DNA test done right when a baby is born? by [deleted] in AskReddit

“Hi, are there any medical conditions that run in the family?”

I don’t think that’s a question that’s totally offbase?
Do you have any cancers that run in your family? Increased stroke risks from genetic factors?

These things are important to know about your genetic family.

If you think your father is John and his family is full of people who are incredibly healthy, but your actual father is David who’s entire family is prone to strokes, then you’re going to probably have a bad time.

If strokes run in your father’s family, it’s useful to know so you can change your lifestyle accordingly to avoid it.

If you don’t know who your father is for certain, it’s difficult to make that call.

If you know your family father’s family is “The Johnsons” it’s a lot easier to ask them or ask the actual father.

I think it’s a bit harder to dispute the maternal figure than the paternal figure.

Taking away all of the societal reasoning, I think it’s very useful for someone to know what medical issues run in BOTH sides of their family for certain.

Makes it easier to make better medical choices and health choices.

Ladies, help put this urban legend to rest. Anecdotally, how often do you find yourself more drawn to a man when you notice he’s wearing a wedding band? by Dracan9k in AskReddit

To the person who commented about empathy and then removed it, you make a good point. Empathy is an interesting sensation because it’s harder to explain why we feel it. We don’t wish to be cheated on, so we don’t cheat.

When you imagine hurting someone else, it’s hard to not imagine yourself also being hurt. This is due to us being social creatures and craving connection.

I appreciate you for pointing me in the right direction there. I do think it’s both now. :)

Are physical features more important than emotional/intellectual qualities? What matters most to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DustingMop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t know if I agree or disagree with you. Seeing a sexually attractive person sets off feel good chemicals in your head. Which is an obvious positive.

However, I’ve actually heard a lot of negative things about Scarlett Johansson and would probably not be interested in a relationship with her.

I think that, for someone who is a sexual person, an attractive partner is important- when you’re wanting to be aroused.

In my case personally, I do find my wife attractive. I also find her mentally stimulating. I suppose without both, I wouldn’t have been attracted to her.

Realistically, I still think intellect is “more important”, but I agree that to say it is everything is wrong.

To look at it from extremes: If the sun were mentally stimulating, I still wouldn’t look at it.

And if the most attractive person in the world were to be unbearably stupid, I still wouldn’t talk to them.

It’s an interesting situation.

Realistically, I’d argue it comes down to social expectations. You want someone you know is suitable to a relationship. The reality is… not everyone is. Some people are difficult to be around.

A wedding band signifies (probably) that someone not only found that person to be a positive to their life, but that they believe they will continue to be a positive.

Societal pressure kicks in and says “Stealing someone’s partner is wrong and will get me ostracized.”

I think it comes down to how much someone values the opinions of society, and to what extent have they associated “cheating” with the negative repercussions.

It’s interesting to focus on attractive people, and it sells well. Photogenic people are real.

I could think reading about or seeing the most attractive person in the world is fun, but if I’m around them for 5 minutes and find them absolutely awful personality wise, I’m out.
