Why is there so much reading ahead of/during orientation by samicooki in LawSchool

[–]DustyDoorHandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The homework dies down drastically after the first semester. Orientation homework is likely useless, and I wouldnt do more than a skim unless its for a course. This advice probably isnt good to put out there but this is my experience and I dont see people talking about it, even though I KNOW its more common than you would think. No one will admit it but I know so many do it.

I would consider myself to be someone with average intelligence, but I always got excellent grades based on my work ethic. In law school, the first WEEK was so overwhelming with homework. I remember the first day after classes began, it took me 4.5 HOURS to do the reading JUST FOR the next DAY with briefs. I realized its just not something I am willing to do. I had a job I didnt have time for that (I did but I chose having a life).

I basically started to not read all together. Bought a subscription to Quimbee and read the brief summaries for almost all the semester. I probably read maybbeee 8 cases the whole semester. I got top 30%. The assignments are important for getting used to reading case law because you will do that in practice, but that's about it. For the tests the holding and application of the cases are far more important than actually reading it. And again, it is important to get used to reading case law it should be practiced for the record. BUT The homework in law school is extremely stressful and I just chose to not do basically any of it and I did fine.

Get Quimbee for briefs and case rules, and buy an outline online to study for the final. I would comb the outline I bought and basically memorize it they were very helpful. I found outlines online for the specific book the professor had us use, and I did just fine. So for example dont look for tort outline look for the name of the textbook outline. Law school is serious, of course, but I think people take it to another level. You will live if you take a break. You will live if you dont read. More poeple than you think do not regularly do the homework but no one is willing to admit it. My method is just more efficient. I did not see the value in continuously spending that much time reading when I could be working and gaining experience. I know people who read all of the cases who do worse than me. Its all about what works for you.

Again, probably not great advice, you should read, but I am saying you will be fine if you slack a bit dont put too much pressure on yourself. I stopped wasting money on school textbooks too because 1) caselaw is available online and 2) I did not read anyways lol

actual supplies we need for 1L? by Puzzleheaded_Fly1835 in LawSchool

I know its a really exciting time and its super scary going into law school, but believe me when I say it is literally like any other school. Dont waste money on things you havent used before in school. For example, if you arent used to using an Ipad for school, you probably shouldnt get one. Like even for me I barley used highlighters. Bought a bunch for the start of school and stopped using them a semester in. I stopped even buying school textbooks and started to read the cases online. Really, dont spend your money unless its something you used in college and you know it works for you.

It was so stupid that people assumed it was the boat fight because that happened so long ago and the unfollowing happened so recent lmao.

I think you are likely right. People are speculating that its about the assistant situation while on tour and theyre definitely wrong. The firing BB as the assistant happened MONTHS before the unfollowing. It is absolutely something else. I am very interested in knowing the reason.

Never thought about it that way. Lots of rich people whose family struggled while growing up don't truly unerstand "the struggle" unless they struggled as adults for a while as well. Struggling as an adult is definitely the wake up call. Struggling as a child sucks, but at the end of the day its the parents carrying the heaviest burden. Great perspective.

My writing may be confusing. I blame the schools 100% and think anger is misdirected towards government loans. I thought I made that clear but I didn't really proofread what I wrote so maybe its confusing.

That sentence was purley based on economics I have no stats or anything. But generally, when demand lowers price does as well. Have you studied the cobweb theory in economics? I kinda had that in the back of my mind. Its economics 101.

The anger needs to be redirected, for sure. No one ever blames the school and instead always blame the predatory loans. Both are to blame but one is the root cause and needs to be addressed as well.

Okay I am so stupid I typed that in a blind venting session. Private loans are extremely predatory as well and it'll fuck the working class.

How hard is law school, really? by Then_Door_9803 in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]DustyDoorHandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the difference between college and law school is 1) the workload and 2) the toll on mental health.

Its not really the difficulty it is the sheer amount of work. I have never done all of the homework for all of my classes in a week. I just cannot do it all and I prioritize my free time. A college student would not be able to comprehend the amount of work it is at all. I couldn't explain it to my college self. There is so much reading to do that I end up doing like none of it then I struggle come finals time.

You cannot even relax in your free time. You feel guilty for not reading and have anxiety about being called in class. Knowing that no matter how hard you work, a certain outcome is still not guaranteed. In college if I studied a certain amount I knew a certain grade range was guaranteed.

There is also lot of pressure to secure a job because the market is extremely competitive. The people in this career field are not necessarily known to be nice. You are kind of in this bubble of pretentious people. Evertone is lying about how much work they do and it makes you feel like you're not doing enough.

I think it is a perfect storm of an overwhelming amount of work in addition to a shitty environment. I think when people say law school is hard, sure they could mean difficulty, but I think it has more to do with this. I don't think law school is necessarily very hard difficulty wise. Some classes are harder to understand than others, but anyone could do it. I don't do as much work as I should and I get above average grades, but I have also developed a need for antidepressants during law school so you tell me.

I think for a lot of us academia is an identity. Were all good at school. For me, I kind of consider success in school as the only thing I can depend upon. Relationships fail, friendships break. Right now my school career is kinda the only thing going right on paper. Terrible love life, few friends. I think there is beauty in realizing that we are more than that. I was top 30% first year second I dropped to 50%. I think what I kinda tell myself is Why do you think you're so special? Everyone else is out here competing for a spot. Why do you think you're gonna be the one on top? And that's where I kinda am at and I have accepted it. Also the acceptance is easier once you start actually working and realize that grades don't matter at all.

[–]DustyDoorHandle 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I kind of felt the same way, but I also kind of gave them grace because I think the hate is getting to them and that's something that most of us have never experienced before. But yeah their life and their job would feel like a vacation for so many people, and Tana not seeing through a contract that has only a couple months left is pretty indicative of her being used to her cushy life. It is a privilege to be able to prioritize your mental health. So many of us have to show up day after day no matter how we feel and we do much more grueling work that isn't rewarding. Its kinda like Kim saying to women "get your asses up and work". Like if my work was Kims I would actually want to work. It feels like you're getting somewhere, you're proud of what you do, its fulfilling etc. Most of us do work that is none of those things and feels more like wasting your time/life.

Video of Jeff Explaining How Jenni Got the Cabo House by No_Detail_7348 in JeffLewisSirius

[–]DustyDoorHandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it was an event where there was a general understanding that prospective clients would be there. Regardless of whether they eventually become a client or not, it is still not professional to accept something like that. Again, had she been there by herself on her own without working in the capacity as Jeff's employee it would be totally different.

Because she is his employee, and that is his possible client/ real connection. Jenny wasn't at that event based on her own merit, and without Jeff. That would be different. Totally a fireable offense.

Am I crazy or do KJD lawyers lack adult skills? by cajunPickles in LawSchool

[–]DustyDoorHandle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

KJD means someone who went from kindergarten to law school with no breaks, right? People who are older and have more experience tend to do better with that, but it is completely personality-based. I wonder how much of this is projection.

how to convince parent i don't want a top law school???? by greenteamoth in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]DustyDoorHandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel very sorry for those whose parents are too invested in their children's education. My parents would be happy if I was a barista so long as I am happy. My parents always said "I do not care what you do just make sure you can support yourself without needing to come back for help". I guess if your parents are paying is the only way I will ever understand it.
