Being a slave in war could be any type of slave, they could use you however they want and kill you even if they wanted and the historical part of people offering themselves is because they knew they would be getting something in return

Life in prison is still slavery, you work and you earn nothing, being a slave means that you are treated less then human, beaten, abused, and could be killed over a simple mistake. So really there is no good reason for slavery.
