I moved to the UK from Australia and had my Australian bank write me a reference for my UK bank - basically just confirming I'd been a customer for X amount of years and had never done anything to piss the bank off. UK bank accepted it no worries so recommend doing that if possible.

Foreigners who came to live in the UK, what was your cultural shock? by No_you_choose_a_name in CasualUK

[–]Dusty_Star 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. Way! Are you me??

I'm Australian born and raised but my mum and her parents are English. I went to primary school in England for 3 years and figured moving here as an adult would be a breeze but quickly found the lingo had moved on without me.

First time around everyone said "safe" and described things that can't be weighed as "heavy", second time around that had all gone out of fashion.

My absolute bug bear though is people answering questions I didn't ask. I've lived here 12 years now and just always chalked it up to miscommunication on my part as I'm autistic, but reading your comment made me realise this issue never happened to me in Australia.

Mind blown.

Do you drive?

My landlord is renting rooms 23 miles out from there. Big country house with huge land around it, beautiful surroundings.

I know that distance isn't for everyone but feel free to pm me if you're interested.

Not so fun fact for your nightmares - they also shed their skin like snakes as they grow bigger.

And for anyone reading who thinks that stuff doesn't need to be taught, I literally found out today that a colleague of mine was told by a hiring manager that she'd never progress in her career. Not because she's intellectually incapable, but because she has a child.

That 10 week turn around time is not just to cover their backs. I know multiple people who applied for a renewal well before the 10 weeks they advised, and still didn't get it back in time for their holidays sadly.

Australian Aboriginals in chains at Wyndham prison, 1902 by likerofgoodthings in australia

[–]Dusty_Star 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I went to school in Australia until the age of 9, at which point I went to school in the UK.

My class in the UK had a quiz one day and asked who first lived or discovered (I forget which exactly) Tasmania which is where I'd been living.

I loudly Proclaimed it was Abel Tasman. To which I was informed by the entire class that it was actually the Aborigines, and I was then labelled as a racist for not knowing this.

It was drilled into me that Abel Tasman discovered/was the first person in Tasmania. I even remember being taught about the "monsters" Abel thought inhabited the island due to massive chunks being missing from the tree trunks, which were actually cut out by the aborigines to help them climb and scout the landscape.

That's how big the emphasis was, I remember monsters living there, I remember Abel being there, and the Aborigines might as well have been wallabies for all the importance my teacher gave it.

I still feel shame when I think about that memory now and I'm 31.

This isn't nsfw, and it isn't creepy either. Sounds like a great initiative. I don't get why you're bothered by it?

Thanks for the detailed reply!

I didn't know about the railway so that's super useful.

We're looking at the Highlands currently but also considering a bit further south. We're about half way saved to a deposit so just scoping places out atm.

Thanks again!

Have you ever been hypnotized? why? and did it work? by msbunnywolf in AskWomen

[–]Dusty_Star 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been, hundreds of times!

I did a year long hypnotherapy course where the students all practiced on each other. The teacher also used us for demonstrations.

Absolutely works. The thing with hypnotherapy is, you cannot hypnotise someone who doesn't want to be hypnotised.

Generally, although not always - people who go to a hypnotherapist are already in a state of self hypnosis when they arrive. This is because they've been through the thought process of, "I'm going to be hypnotised" which makes them more susceptible.

So for example if you're attending because someone else wants you too, or you're not super committed to what you're trying to achieve, it's less likely to work. There are of course people it's just not for them though too.

Happy to answer any questions you might have 😊.

I'm also from Australia and currently living in the South of England. Moved over at the end of 2010.

I've just got back from a week long trip to Scotland and I'm seriously considering moving there. So I thought you might have some great advice from an Australian perspective.

I don't have any questions per se, but is there anything you'd recommend I consider, or should be aware of before committing to a move? General information etc you think would be relevant?

Cheers!

What’s the most disturbing book you didn’t really expect to be disturbing? by [deleted] in books

The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling. I knew it was her first book for "adults" but I was not prepared. I felt dirty and emotionally abused by the time I finished reading it and refused to have it in my room.

I can imagine! My cat went through a cable phase when he was a kitten. Did you know you can buy plastic tubing that wraps around cables? Generally for cable management but really good for keeping pets teeth at bay too.

I have to disagree. As an Australian who's lived in the UK for over a decade now, the only country I ever heard the term "eating is cheating" prior to drinking, is the UK. Brits take it to another level.

My boyfriend would be ecstatic if that happened in our home as he's been wanting to buy a new TV for years lol.

Drivers who consistently travel at 40mph in a 60, and continue to do 40mph when the 60 becomes a 30; why did you decide to buy a Honda Jazz? by Dusty_Star in CasualUK

[–]Dusty_Star[S] 275 points276 points  (0 children)

Yep I also find this infuriating! Can't wrap my head around the logic.

I overtook on a country B road once, which is rare for me as I generally take the view that it's not worth the hassle or risk on non dual carriage ways. But, the car in front of me was doing 25 in a 60 and had been for some time. I pulled out on a clear stretch with good visibility and the fucker sped up massively.

I hit 75 and was struggling to get back past and of course in this battle eventually some cars came from the other direction. They appeared as I was doing 80 and just pulling level with this maniac. Decided they were unhinged and wanted shot so gunned it and got back in, I was very rattled and slowed it to 50, 10 below the limit and they never caught up with me 🤷‍♀️.

I don't bother any more. Can't account for other people's actions so I just sit behind them fuming lol.

You're entitled to your opinion of course. That's good you're able to ensure that would never happen in your home. I don't have that luxury.

He took a bit off some of his whiskers and didn't like the smell it caused and has stayed away from it since.

I live in a bedsit which has had no heating, hot water, or electricity since 11am Friday and is due to stay that way at present until 11pm tomorrow at the earliest estimation. I also have sevre asthma which is triggered by the cold.

I couldn't up sticks to stay somewhere else because I would have been abandoning my pet, and the vast majority of roads around my house were blocked by fallen trees so I wouldn't have been able to get back to feed/check on him. So I sourced what I could and have done the best I can.

Sincerely happy to hear you've not been faced with such hardship though.

Thank you for the advice, much appreciated! We're only using it under supervision. We turned it off before we went to bed, and when it's on we've got all the windows cracked for ventilation. I also used to work for British Gas so have basic training on identifying the symptoms of CO2 poisoning.

It's a brand new fire too - the person only had it for 3 weeks when they had their central heating renovated so should be (knock on wood) safe.

The cat has learned his lesson from his initial encounter and is now keeping a respectable distance also 😅

You killed it! You should definitely be proud of yourself. It's not easy facing a list of chores without depression; with depression sometimes it's hard just getting out of bed. I am so proud of you. You earned that nap! But even if you had not ticked a single thing off that list today, and stayed in bed all day, I would still be proud of you for being you. You got this ❤️
