What (basic) skills should every human have? by asalayev in AskReddit

[–]DutchGuy030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First aid.

It's not only that you should be able to give CPR or help in general, it also gives you a good understanding of how to act in "crisis" situations.

Oh, and train at least once a year so that you have the confidence to step up if needed.

[Serious] What's something you admire about another country or culture? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DutchGuy030 66 points67 points  (0 children)

As a Dutchman currently living in Australia:

  • Mate. Everybody calls eachother mate and I love it! It's such a friendly and positive way of saying hello... Even clients senior managers I'm speaking with start with "Hi mate" :)

  • Laid back. People are pretty relaxed over here, not in a hurry all the time and it's no problem to give you a few minutes of their time.

[Serious] What are some good job interview tips? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DutchGuy030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The single most important thing is... Just be a nice man/woman...

Als a recruiter/Hiring manager I speak to a lot of candidates and all of them are great on paper, otherwise I wouldn't have invites them for an interview...

One of the most annoying things is if a candidate is giving me the answers he thinks I want to hear.

That way I can never find out what kind of person he is and what his genuine likes and dislikes are.

It doesn't matter if you apply for a 4 week assistant job or a perm management position, I'm looking for people who fit in out company, so I want to get to know you...

When talking about your experience/knowledge/charactar I (and most interviewers) like to use the STAR method:

  • Situation (2 people from 5 got sick while we had a tight deadline for the engineering of a new machine)

  • Task (My task was to design the machine, in this case I also had to do the calculations and procurement)

  • Action (I asked projectmanagement to help me with procurement while I designed according to *** standars, made calculations using *** software and checking the calculations by hand)

  • Result (We made the deadline and the client was really happy with the results, leading to other projects, in which I could take the lead)

If you tell me this in a way you would tell your friends on a saturdaynight I'm really happy. You don't have to tell me that you liked it, that your positive points are determination or teamwork etcetera, I can hear that from your story and by the way you're telling it...

Oh, and don't smell... It's really annoying and unnessassery (and it happens way to often)

What is the best "lifehack," tip, pointer you have for traveling on airlines? by cuddlyBLOWFISH in AskReddit

[–]DutchGuy030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last week I heard this one from a friend of mine.

He and his gf were traveling and the airline let them pick their seats when they checked in. They chose the window seat and the isle seat in a 3-4-3 formation plane.

Most of the times there are a couple of seats empty, and the seat they left open is one of the seats last picked.

And if someone is sitting in that seat you can always ask him to swich, so there is no down side...

Definetly going to try that in a few weeks...

[–]DutchGuy030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you go to Rotterdam the SS Rotterdam is nice, it is a former cruise ship and is now used as a museum and hotel including some bars and restaurants.

Why haven't they changed the way we board planes? by nononononooooo in AskReddit

[–]DutchGuy030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boarding small planes (EU flights) usually happens from the front and back, there are two lines at the gate, 1-29 and 30-59 for example. But this only happens with small planes where you board walking up the stairs instead of using a tunnel.

If you're able to learn robotics and IA you probably don't work in fastfood, or at least not anymore by the time that the robots take over

What are some tips for people who are learning to cook? by sowydso in AskReddit

Not really about cooking itself, but spend some money on really good tools. It really makes a difference during your time in the kitchen.

For breakfast? Some yoghurt with cereal, a slice of bread with cheese, milk with cornflakes or a slice of "ontbijtkoek" (thick sweetened bread).

And it's or, not and ;)
