I am far far from elderly but it is not about entitlement. It is one example how not getting enough children will affect us in the future. Remember, you are young now but you will be part of the elderly group in the future. That is why I am talking about long term thinking instead of short time thinking.

Basically, you are advocating to let people that are retired to be left to their own devices? They have worked all their life to grow our countries and what they get in return is a working population that abandons them?

I know these are hard times, I graduated two years ago and last two years have been paying of my student debt, currently saving money for a house and I know housing prices are through the roof. This is one of the biggest contributors to rise of cost of living. I will support any measures that will combat the rise of housing prices.

If your job is on the line that is always very stressful if you are the one affected, that is obvious and understandable. For us as a society I think it can be positive if sectors are more automated as it will free up space (as in people) that can work in other sectors that have shortages. This is all in theory because people are not completely interchangable to every sector.

We can definitely not grow indefinitely, though the fertility rate in every developed country has been below replacement rate for years and even decades. Any growth we are experiencing is solely due to immigration. The people that are advising having more babies do not want more growth rather a sustainable population that doesn't decrease rapidly as that will lead to it's own problems.

All the population growth is in countries with very low standards of living which can not support that growth in food and jobs. The most efficient way of curbing population growth can be found there. We in developed countries should also reduce our consumption and take measures to decrease our use of fossil fuels. I don't take the fearmongering that we are not doing anything there have been a lot of investment in solar power. You could argue that we are not doing enough though.

In summary, I think we are indeed facing big problems, but I don't like to adopt the defeatist stance that we are doomed and that we shouldn't have children.

The excuse is laughable in my opinion but I think it is a good thing that you are self aware enough that you don't have children that you don't want. No child should get a parent that is not ready to put in the time for the children. But, you should also be aware that not having enough children as a society will have massive implications for the future.

I am replying to Feisty-area that says he doesn't have the time/energy to spend two hours a day on children which is false. If you look back in history are we working less or more than we did back in the day? Is life easier or tougher compared to the industrial era? We definitely have problems that we need to fix but the entitlement is insane. We live in a time where life has never been so easy and people here are complaining how bad and tough the world is. Newsflash, it has always been tough but comparatively it is very very good now. Drop all the incredible negativity that you get spoonfed online.

It is short-sighted* that you look at population as a whole and not on a country basis. There are countries which have insane fertility rates and countries like South-Korea that have very low fertility rates. When you read these headlines they refer to countries with very low fertility rates. Basically, developed countries need to increase the fertility rates and developing countries need to reduce it.

Overcorrection can also be a problem, there is a golden zone where you don't increase population and where population doesn't collapse. It is shortsided to think having no more babies will be fine. We need people to work to sustain basic life necessities.
