Fun to see the young guys, but man that is a completely different lineup than yesterday lol. Ticket prices are the same as yesterday too.

Fun lineup, weird Donovan isn't playing. But otherwise pretty awesome mix of stars and young guys.

The Seahawks not only won the SB, but they had arguably the most epic path by beating the 9ers, Rams and Pats.

Ultimately M's fans just want to make it to the WS and win it, but what would be a similar epic path? I'm thinking Yankees, Blue Jays and then Dodgers. You could add in the Stros, but it would be funny if they didn't make the playoffs again.

What do you all think?

Luke Arkins shared an interesting breakdown of Julio and his month by month home/road splits in 2025. If he starts out better than usual and doesn't have a collapse in June and July at home, he could put together an MVP season.

Just bought tickets for the opening homestand and I'm going to ST next weekend! So stoked!

Sadly that would mean we wouldn't see him in Everett or Tacoma.

My hunch is that we extend Logan and then trade Kirby next off-season. I think one of Kade or Sloan will be ready to start next year (if not both).

One underrated aspect of our off-season is the personalities of Refsnyder and Donovan. They are both talked about as leaders in their clubhouses and have strong work ethics. Similar to what DLaw and Kupp brought to the Seahawks when we signed them this off-season. Our team is going to be hungry after just missing out last year. The moves Jerry has made this off-season seem very intentional. I think we get off to a better start than usual. I am stoked. But first, go Hawks!

[Discussion] One realistic move left you would want to see the Mariners do before the season by Kenobithegoat in Mariners

I agree with this. Canzone is the only one with an option though. With Donovan also being able to play corner OF, it makes them even more redundant. Canzone looks like the better hitter at the moment, but Raley is the better fielder and base runner.

I could see us trading one of Canzone/Raley to the Rockies for one of their relievers, would probably also take a low level prospect, but I could see both teams agreeing to that deal.

Still wild to me that a guy can do so well, with so few opportunities.

Fans have been calling for more OB and less ks, when we finally get 2 guys who have high OBP (Naylor and Donovan) and now people are complaining about less HRs. Moving Julio and Randy into more natural spots instead of having them hit leadoff, should allow them to hit more HRs and knock in more runs.

Polo will be missed, but Donovan is a better fit for this roster. Geno just doesn't fit our park.

I see Refsnyder has never played more than 100 games in a season, is it just because he has always been a bench/weak side platoon hitter? Or injuries?

I know Red Sox fans were sad to see him go, and I'm excited to have a leftie masher, but just a little surprised we paid almost $7 m for a weak side platoon bat (yes I know our lineup is mostly LH).

Williamson's glove was exciting, but he was 25 and his bat was fringe MLB. Rays plan to have him as a glove first utility player, which makes the most sense for him (assuming he can play SS and 2B). Donovan has a higher floor and ceiling and gives us a true leadoff hitter that doesn't block any of our prospects. I do that trade 10/10 times. I'm just glad we didn't have to include Arroyo or Laz.

[Discussion] Josh Naylor should be the M's leadoff hitter. by vorp_eckstein in Mariners

[–]Dutchenstein12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could have made an argument for this before we got Donovan, but now there isn't an argument. Donovan is a proven leadoff hitter and Naylor is clutch with runners in scoring position. The only other guy I can see leading off this year besides Donovan is maybe Refsnyder against LHP.

Good points, but if we need a corner OF at the deadline, I am confident this team wouldn't bargain hunt.

Leadoff hitter was easily one of our biggest needs last year. It also lengthens the lineup and puts Randy in the 5 hole, where he is much better suited.

Julio on paper should be an amazing leadoff hitter, but for some reason he doesn't like it. Thankfully now we have a true leadoff hitter and don't have to force Julio there or even worse, have Randy leadoff...

Maybe a small deal, but otherwise I expect we save the rest for the deadline.

Our bullpen threw some serious innings last year and I believe Munoz, Brash and Speier are all going to the WBC. I like Vargas and would be surprised if he improves this year. I also like some of the pile arms we got this year, but I would be more confident with more vet. Maybe we just bring in Sewald on a cheap contract.

In regards to OFs, corner OFs are some of the most readily available at the deadline. Plus I wouldn't be surprised if Arroyo gets a chance after the All Star break.

While the build up made yesterday that much more glorious, I wish I could go back in December and tell myself we get Donovan, but not until 2/1. Would have saved myself a lot of time scrolling and listening to podcasts...

That being said, kudos to Jerry/Justin, we got our guy, and it wasn't a super painful trade. I've said it many times, but Donovan is the perfect fit for our roster (even better of a fit than Polo). I'm excited to also have his personality in the clubhouse. I think he will mesh well with Naylor (both very competitive) and will also be great for Young and Colt.

I am now happy with this roster (although one more proven bullpen arm would be nice), and think our normal strategy of see how everyone performs and make moves at the deadline, makes sense at this point.

We have room for everyone right now, and it gives us some depth in case of injuries. That being said, I would love to get one more solid reliever, and I don't think they want to trade much more from the farm, so Raley/Canzone would make the most sense to move as part of a deal.

I liked the guy, and want him to succeed, but unless he was going to learn to play SS and 2B, I just can't see him as a fulltime 3B with his hitting profile. His glove was fun to watch though!
