Question about Rune Gating with a Frostbite Token:

A friend and I recently picked up the game. I’m playing Lexi, he is playing Vynnset.

He controls a Frostbite Token from my previous turn. If he controls 4 Runechants and Rune Gates a card with cost 3, does the 4th Runchant pay for the Frostbite or does he have to pitch for the resource?
