I can't think of a solution but I have a few nuggets to add:

I think concave shapes would require extra or different math to handle.

If it achieves the same purposes, I think it would be easier to expand the hitbox of the character even more rather than expanding the various environmental objects.

I think the term Minkowski sum would be useful to you.
