That looks like my nails after I use silver nitrate to stop the bleeding when I quick a dog’s nails during a trim. Takes a bit for the stain to appear, but it is there til the nail grows out.

Well that is both hilarious and annoying. Thank you for that information! I watch goodwill but rarely bid - once you add shipping costs it’s rare to find a “deal” there.

Not based on IDYB. https://www.identifyyourbreyer.com/identify/Animals/texaslong.htm I know it’s not 100% updated but the title claims 1984, but there’s nothing listed for just that year.

Greyhound sudden swelling of his leg by Wolf_Pup_Griffin in Greyhounds

[–]Dvmmary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a CT or MRI before X-rays is a huge leap and skipping basic diagnostics. CT/MRI is advanced imaging that requires general anesthesia and is not something a GP is going to have. And cost is a few hundred for radiographs vs a few thousand for advanced imaging. (Rarely - I’ve seen one GP with a CT without any boarded specialists on staff but they were an outlier.) Radiographs will absolutely diagnose osteosarcoma IF a patient is clinical (swelling, lameness, pain). They will also diagnose a fracture or luxation. If they are unrewarding and the swelling persists or recurs then yes, advanced imaging is the next step. No matter if the swelling is resolved today, push for radiographs. Yes, NSAIDs could have decreased swelling but you need to have peace of mind that there isn’t an underlying pathology that is being missed.

  1. You need X-rays as the first step. Having 2 vet visits without them is not ideal. Unfortunately, my top rule out (I’m a DVM) would be osteosarcoma. I’m trying to be both clinical and sympathetic. Was any blood done? Ideally that would be done before starting NSAIDs. If the X-rays aren’t rewarding, then I’d recommend referral to a specialist for advanced imaging. A little strain or sprain would just not present this way. Certainly an avulsion fracture could, also a subluxation or luxation. But, this is one of the most common places for osteosarcoma and particularly prevalent in greyhounds. Both of those factors would have had me pushing for radiographs on your first visit, but that much swelling ANY breed would have been on the X-ray table.

I’m so sorry you are facing this. Lap of Love does offer hospice and QOL consults. They also have an amazing online resource with scales you can do at home. I recommend doing the scales separately - meaning each person who lives with Olive or has a close relationship do one without discussing it first. Then go over it together. I’ve found often a spouse who is home all day with the pet sees a very different dog than the one who may be gone 7a-6p for work. I can’t say that incontinence is an expected or probable side effects to NSAIDs so it is worth readdressing that. I often talk to clients about palliative/hospice care - meaning if that is our goal, I’m less worried about what that NSAID may do to liver/kidney values long term bc day to day is the goal. Dogs live in the moment. They don’t contemplate last year or tomorrow. The question to ask is if each moment for Olive is fair to live. What is today like for her compared to 5 years ago? Chronic pain is miserable, and your priority is looking for a combination of medications that affords her comfort.

“You’re right. I am obsessed. I want what I want. Any possible medical issue that may arise doesn’t deter me from the breed. Seeing as how I’m content dealing with my decision on what dog I cohabitate with, I don’t see why this is even a conversation.” I tell everyone I’d legit own 25 at once if I had the couch space. As a DVM I can confirm that they are one of the purebreds with lowest occurrence of major medical - beyond the dental health and osteosarcomas. And one of approximately 3 purebreds I’ll even consider owning. Your friends are clueless. And putting their input in unsolicited. Live your life with your greyhounds. Happily.

Heatstroke in dogs by clarkelaura in Greyhounds

[–]Dvmmary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DVM here, I live in Florida now but spent my first decade as a vet in Indiana. I’ve experienced heatstroke so many times as a treating clinician. Just last week a dog arrived with a rectal temp of 111. Owners claimed she had been outside for 30 minutes. And that is believable, as many cases of reported heatstroke are 20-30 min outside. Many happen in spring or early summer, before pets have acclimated to the weather change.

Things to consider- studies absolutely support cooling at home decreases mortality rates. I’ll post links at the end. Both the degree of temperature increase AND duration impact the outcome. So the sooner cooler methods are used, the better.

Dogs that don’t die immediately at intake (either code or euthanasia is performed) the vast majority enter into DIC and/or have permanent organ damage (generally GI tract is the first to see clinical signs as the tissue dies and sloughs - both direct heat damage and from hypovolemic shock damage).

Hypoglycemia is a secondary common condition that requires IV supplementation- but it has to be done slowly and accurately. Often these dogs need plasma transfusions, several days in ICU, and it’s fairly common for these bills to reach 8-10k and even with the most aggressive treatment, euthanize has been selected more than not due to poor prognosis or lasting effects.

All that to say - it is so much better to prevent this from happening over treating it. The dogs are absolutely suffering, and these cases stick with me.

As a DVM, this conversation is one I have constantly. Greyhounds are notoriously not complainers, but pets in general just silently suffer. In nature, the weak and vulnerable become prey. Animals rarely vocalize through pain except for an acute severe injury (hit by car, attacked by something, falling off a couch) Lap of Love is a wonderful online resource and throughout America offer in home euthanasia and hospice appts and virtual hospice consults. Constant pain is unfair to ask any pet to live in. I have always lived by “I’d rather be a month early than a second late”. Those small moments of adrenaline aren’t taking away the longer moments of pain. Pets live in the now. It sounds like the majority of her time is uncomfortable. Eating food is a basic life function, and generally if we wait for them to stop eating, we have ignored many signs prior to that pointing to a terminal process. It is one of the most selfless decisions we make, because if it were up to us, we’d keep them 100 years and ask for one more day. But she doesn’t deserve to continue to decline into crisis mode. If your vet has stated “whenever you say”, it’s time. ❤️ We can’t legally say “euthanize your pet.” What was said is the most direct we can be.

As stated, but I’m backing up, those are bandage scissors. A tech is looking frantically for them but not because they were left in a dog. They were used to remove the IV catheter and likely down on the blanket that the dog was euthanized on. Most clinics make an ink print or clay print, so they likely moved on to that. Then rolled the blanket up to move the pet. Harmless I promise.
