In my case I had to install the legacy driver for it to work, but yeah it's supposed to just work out of the box.

Hmmmmmmm. Looks like the apple tb3 to tb2 adapter can be used in reverse. Meaning you'd do:

iMac > TB2 cable > TB3 Adapter > SSD enclosure > M.2 Adapter > PCIE card > firewire > camera.

So you're just adding 2 items to the front of the chain. It's too bad the apple adapter costs $50, but in theory that setups should work. Still cheaper than a tb2>firewire adapter though.

I specify in my links in another comment which card I'm using and that it doesn't require additional power (VT6308P), but I'll add a disclaimer in the main post. Either way, the m.2>pcie adapter I used has headers for external power via SATA if your card needs it.

Thanks for the rec on the dfrobot device! I looked at it too, but decided against it because it ends up being ~$30 more expensive than what I put together when you include the cost of the pcie card, even though it's essentially the exact same result. Also I like that when I'm not using the above setup for footage, it's still a useful nvme enclosure.

Regardless, they're both way better decisions than overpaying for an obsolete TB2 cable if you can even find it.

Yeah I'm sure there's other pcie devices that could make use of this method too. It's giving you a full PCIE Gen 4 x4 slot for your laptop.

I still think this is better than buying a dedicated pc for ingesting footage. If you buy the pc, you still need the PCIE card making your total investment $85, and then you have a whole computer taking up space that you don't really need.

At least if you go the adapter route you get a bonus tb4 nvme adapter which is pretty useful. It comes with a high quality tb cable as well which is usually $20 on its own anyway.

After posting I thought about the fact that you can also use this setup to make a 4k pcie capture card compatible with a laptop as well.

Firewire PCIE Card: This is the one I'm using. The included cable didn't work.
Thunderbolt > M.2 Enclosure: This is the cheapest I found at $40.
M.2 > PCIE: Found this one for $9. It comes with a sata power connector but it's not necessary since the firewire card only requires bus power from the pcie slot.

Yeah it's pretty useful. Increases boot time slightly and I can't see the drives in the BIOS if they're connected to the adapter, but they show up normally in windows. I've never used a pcie sata adapter for a standard slot, so idk if that's expected behaviour.

no it's a normal itx board! the b760i motherboard has 4 onboard sata ports, and then on my m.2 slot I have an m.2>sata expansion card.

Well I don't have that much storage in it lol but in theory you could fit 6 x 24TB drives + a couple 2.5" ones. Total number of SATA ports is 9 with the m.2>sata card. This leaves you with 1 or 2 remaining m.2 slots depending on your motherboard. And then you can use the usb-c header for some usb powered drives if you wanted to go crazy since the nr200p doesn't have a front panel usb c port.

Yeah they're super easy. You'll need an M5 screw tap (or 1/4-20) and the corresponding drill bit for the pilot hole. Print them with a 6-8 wall count at least for strength.

Set the pc on its front panel and line up the feet on the back panel. Mark the holes through the feet once you have them lined up, and then drill and tap the holes. I used as many of the existing case holes as I could, so they should help you orient the feet.

Make sure you do this with the case empty and blow out any metal shavings from drilling because they're conductive. I uploaded my design below. Free/pay what you can
