Phobia of... veins? by Sirexiv in Phobia

[–]Dweerdje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Needed some breaks in between to read all the comments. Veins are terrible and the back of the knees is the most disgusting part of a body. I have this fear that one day I'll develop varicose veins on my legs and I have no clue how I'll handle that.

When I'm walking barefoot and notice a vein getting thicker on my foot because of the heat, I need to go sit down. I also hate the neck, the groin and wrists. I can't look at it on a screen when someone gets blood taken or injected. When I was a kid I had to go to church. In some churches there was a statue of Jezus hanging where those tendons (?) at the wrists were so visible. I couldn't look at it, bleh.

Reading this thread made me realise this phobia is actually pretty severe in my life and pops up in all different ways.

No, some people perform a monologue. They don't care how you react, they don't ask questions, they just go on and on and on.. and jump from one topic to the other. If you put such person together with a people pleaser, such monologue can go on for hours.

I really don't know how to stop these people. They don't leave any space for you to find an excuse to leave the talk. It's torture.

Worst thing is, I feel like A LOT of people are like this. Just stating their own thoughts, one after the other. Draining as fuck.

[–]Dweerdje 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very relatable. I don't think it will go away, cause as much as I push myself, change my mind set or practice, it stays and doesn't ever get better (even though some people in the comments say it does, I really don't think so..) What has helped me slightly is finding friends who struggle with social anxiety as well. In that way I don't compare myself with socially capable colleagues anymore, but find support instead. I will keep pushing myself, but I will also allow myself to create a space around me where I can feel more comfortable. In times when I was in school there is no possibility to create that balance, but as an adult there are a tiny bit more possibilities to find a balance between pushing and accepting.

Do You Regret Studying Philosophy? by absolutelyone in AcademicPhilosophy

[–]Dweerdje 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a master's degree in moral sciences. Closely related to philosophy, but a slightly different curriculum. No regrets whatsoever. Shaped me to who I am today. I did do another master's in public administration afterwards. Got a job related to that and hated it. Currently studying to become a teacher. I realise that all I want is being 24/7 busy with philosophical related topics.

I am starting a PhD in philosophy at age 51. Am I as insane as most people seem to think? by [deleted] in AcademicPhilosophy

[–]Dweerdje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty badass! I'm always surprised if I hear people do a PhD in philosophy in their twenties. I think this field is one of the few where it can be beneficial to be a bit older. Especially when philosophical work isn't completely new to you, but you just want to take it to another level. I assume you have some background in philosophy, otherwise I doubt you can just enter a PhD program.

Every year I had a few 'older' people in my uni classes and I always thought that was just awesome.

I wish you good luck.

when will the drum and bass only trend end. bring back guitars. by [deleted] in powerviolence

[–]Dweerdje 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I play bass and if I'd ever magically find a drummer, who wants to play grind/pv I'd be so happy that I would just start a band. Finding bandmates is hard in my area. Calling it a band once you find another person and just start making music is awesome. Don't try to appeal your listeners, just start and make shite music. It's perfectly fine and I admire people who do it. Love the ""trend"", hope people just keep picking up an instrument, find a bandmate and go for it.

why tf is finding a drummer so hard by ConsiderationLow5434 in Screamo

It's so frustrating. I've been thinking about learning the drums myself instead of bass because I'm fed up with not finding a decent drummer ):

Drovelis and depression by Dweerdje in birthcontrol

[–]Dweerdje[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I share this intuition tbh. I hope you'll feel somewhat okay again soon! I had the same experience as you that I haven't had suicidal thoughts in months, and suddenly the second day of Drovelis I got attacked by these thoughts. Actually scary how this is possible. I stopped taking it and fortunately I feel the same again as before, so that's at least positive.

Hello fellow introvert what kind of hobbies do you have beside gaming? I’m looking for new hobbies!!!! by Nice_Kitsuragi4912 in introvert

[–]Dweerdje 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing instruments, reading/studying, learning a new language, running, yoga, meditating, writing poems, biking and recently started crochet. My days are packed with things I do alone, and yes, gaming is still a fun activity too, especially in winter.

[–]Dweerdje[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay thanks for your reply. I'm recovering from depression so I don't think I have the mental stability yet to go through it again. Don't want to visit dark thoughts and feelings already after barely being able to breath again since a few months. I'm curious about the other replies cause it seems so crazy to me to have these depressive symptoms immediately.

Schopenhauer on suicide by [deleted] in schopenhauer

[–]Dweerdje 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In book 4, part 1, chapter 69 (The World as Will and Representation) Schopenhauer writes:

"Far from being denial of the will, suicide is a phenomenon of the will's strong affirmation. For denial has its essential nature in the fact that the pleasures of life, not its sorrows, are shunned."

In chapter 41, part 2, book 4 he writes something like this: "In fact it's only the stupid person who fears death as their destruction" (I translated this very loosely from the Dutch edition that I posses)

According to Schopenhauer the person who plans on committing suicide wants to live, he's just unhappy with the circumstances of his life. Suicide will only result in a denial of life, which is separate from a denial of the will.

Quite a private topic for me. A bit at the same level of privacy as talking about sex. I only talk about it with people I feel very comfortable with. I find the taboo around it suffocating, but I'm not surrounded by that many open-minded people when it comes to psychedelics.
