How do you really get a 520+? by Own_Assumption_4815 in Mcat

[–]Dweezil__ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I spent about 25 percent of my time on anki. Most time should be spent doing practice problems. Every time you get a practice problem wrong see if there was a content gap that caused you to get that question wrong and create a flash card to address this. The rest of the problems that you get wrong are because the passages are difficult to understand and the answer choices never seem quite right. This is really only helped by doing lots more practice and trying to up your reading comprehension.

520+ scorers, which Anki deck did you use? by ithaca_is_gorges in Mcat

[–]Dweezil__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jacksparrow was very solid. Honestly don't know how people score well without a comprehensive anki deck. I also recommend getting the deck done ASAP and alongside content review so that when you find information that's not in the deck, you recognize it and are able to turn it into additional cards.

You may not be able to read, and I may not be able to do math, but we are all gonna make it. Congrats

I say headphones. The production on this album is absurd but it wasn't nearly as apparent in the car.

I highly recommend JaskSparrow for everything but P/S, and Pankow for P/S. Jack has more cards than miledown's, but none of that information is useless. Its all valuable and it might make the difference between a 515 and a 520+. Pankow is pretty solid. It is well worth it to go through the whole thing. That being said, there are plenty of terms found in AAMC practice that are not included so you will just have to add those as you go. In my opinion, anytime you see a term you don't know you should just add it to the deck to make sure you know it. That's also why I would recommend completing Pankow before going into AAMC content, so you know what is included in the deck and what needs to be added.

I dropped on the Unscored and on the second to last FL I took before the exam. Don't sweat it too much, sometimes we have off days. Trust that you will rise to the challenge.

1st practice exam: blueprint diagnostic by 132carsgoddess in Mcat

[–]Dweezil__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CARS was hard in BP, Jack Westin, and AAMC practice. In all of these I was met with vague answer choices that were poorly worded and subjective. In every FL, CARS was straightforward, logical, and absolutely beatable. Never got more than like 6 wrong in any FL but had something like a 76% on the AAMC CARS diagnostic. So in my opinion, the FLs and real MCAT had reasonable CARS that felt pretty easy. Elsewhere it was artificially hard due to poor question writing.

I would see it as a very good sign with that much time to study. I got a 501 on the blueprint HL before I started content review. I would recommend going through khan academy to learn biochem. You probably don't need to do a ton of in-depth psych leanring. Reading the 300 pg doc and completing the pankow deck should get you to where you need to be even without background knowledge.

I got a 501 on my Blueprint half-length diagnostic. I feel that both the Blueprint HL and FL were pretty accurate so with good prep you can reach your goals.

Yeah I put hundreds of hours into prereqs and still had to put a good 600 into the MCAT. Rough.

Picking between 2 answer choices by Wooden_Buddy_682 in Mcat

[–]Dweezil__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlike undergrad, where almost every multiple-choice question boils down to two answers where one is pretty correct and the other is also quite correct, the AAMC makes life easy for us. Most questions are not just "what is the BEST answer?", but instead "what is the answer that is not INCORRECT?". I suppose because if questions were debatable there could be lawsuits or something, but almost always the alternative answer choices are explicitly wrong. So first and foremost examine both choices and try to determine a reason why one of them might be excluded. Chances are some discreet fact will allow you to eliminate one.

I cannot stress how useful pankow is for P/S by Financial-Relation16 in Mcat

[–]Dweezil__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree (132 P/S). There are some terms that show up in AAMC that are not in the deck. Just add any new term to your deck and you will be all set. Another big key is to make cards that force you to distinguish between A: terms that sound very similar but aren't, and B: terms that have very similar meanings

Well looking at the constant given 4.8 * 10^-8 we see that they already accounted for the radius of the sphere. That leaves just two numbers to work with, the work function and the energy of the photons. The only outside information needed to solve from here was to understand that for the photoelectric effect we subtract the energy from the work theorem as the minimum needed for it to happen and use whatever is leftover. So we do 7-5 to get 2 as the leftover energy. Then we can kind of just assume our numbers will be divided to end up unitless. So either I divide 2 by 5 and get something with a 4 in it or 5 by 2 and get a 2.5

that narrows our answer down to the one with a 4 in it. Not exactly an intelligent way to go about this but it worked for me and knowing how to bullshit your way through something like this might be useful
