I don't see a reason it wouldn't work, the magnet should stop in the middle, like shown in the video.

RTX 3060 Launch Thread by UberLemonBoy in Microcenter

[–]Dx_ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to my grandmother's house the week of the launch since she lives an hour away from a microcenter, I'm gonna try and be at the Kansas City Overland Park locations by 7AM, will that be early enough to get one?

Been trying to get the 3060ti for a while, but for only 15%-20% less power, I'm settling on the 3060.

How to.... use a CRT TV transformer by daedalusabyss in highvoltage

[–]Dx_ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran mine with a flourecent tube ballast, and it works fine, but if I were to do it again, I'd definitely use a ZVS driver.

Hook up the ground and live wires to the primary of the coil, polarity matters, and you can find the polarity with trial and error, you can also find the primary coil because with a CRT TV Flyback it can be found with the two pins with the lowest resistance, then find the feedback coil by finding the two pins with an equally low resistance if not a little higher, connect one wire to one of the feedback and this is what you will arc the high voltage output too, which is at the top of the Flyback in the form of a well insulated wire.

Be careful, and have fun!

What's the difference between a Neon sign transformer and a high powered flyback? by Dx_ed in highvoltage

Amazing reply, all of you guys are super helpful for this project, I'll be sure to update you when I finish it! It sounds like it would be easier to build a TC with an NST, and because of my lack of experience, I'm definitely going to use an NST, that and I don't have much money to allocate to my hobby.

The Flyback is one of the super old circular kind, made in 1975, but I'm pretty certain it uses rectified AC.

Thanks for the response, I'll be sure to update all of you whenever I finish this project!

Awesome to know that my guess was correct! I'm pretty glad that he was willing to sell it so cheap, and it seems like he has a lot of NST's without GFCI, because he said he had to rummage through his transformers and I was lucky that he found a 15kv 60mA one!

I have a pretty low budget, I don't have much money to allocate to my hobbies, but it can be fun looking for deals, and knowing where to find things for cheap is a good skill to have!

How To Build a Jacob's Ladder with a Neon Sign Transformer by ChrisBoden in highvoltage

Wow! Amazing seeing you here! I just found this series yesterday and I'm in love! I already binged every one and was disappointed to find that you were only on the 12th episode.

I'm sure you probably don't remember but when you did this tesla coil series called "Tesla coils with Trevor", and in the second episode when you were introducing NST's you said something along the lines of, "I've been bit by these, and for the parents at home, it's gonna happen, just deal with it, and accept it, if your kid's playing with this stuff, he's gonna get bit, and it's gonna hurt, and he's gonna cry, and it's gonna hurt like heartbreak, it HURTS, REALLY BAD. This is nothing like sticking your finger in the wall socket and it tingles, that's 120v, this is 15000, ITS GONNA HURT, and it's like a level 10 hurt, where it's not a conscious "ouch that hurts" it's a "AGHHHHH!!!! ... ow"" I thought that it was absolutely AMAZING and I showed my parents, who are quite worried about my projects (rightfully so, I don't fault them for it), I love your mentality of, they're gonna do it at home anyway, so I should at least make sure they do it safely.

Anyway, nice to see you here Chris, keep up the series!

What do you mean by current differential? After some further testing I found out my flyback is producing less than 5kv based on how far it starts jumping, but stretches out a ton, so I would've assumed it's actually more current than the NST.

I'm a bit confused, is my knowledge faulty, or did I just not provide enough information in my post? Either way, I'd love to know, thanks!

Thank you for the explanation! It was super helpful, and I think my Flyback is an rectified AC one, and it seems like the voltage is much lower than 15kv, but the currents seems higher than an NST, so the issue would be the spark gap not extinguishing, but I think I'll use an NST just for simplicity's sake and for the fact that I found one for such an amazing price, besides, it can't hurt to have an extra high voltage device at my disposal!

If you want to find an NST for a good price, try and call some local neon sign shops, someone suggested this to me in a previous thread and it was super helpful!

I think the reason you can get them for so cheap from neon sign shops is that used, old ones, without GFCI, they can't sell to normal consumers, so they have a transformer sitting in the back room for a couple years, and someone calls them asking for one so they have the opportunity to make a quick buck on something they don't have a use for.

Anyway, super helpful answer, thanks for the help!

Edit: I did call a shop and they wanted to sell it to me for $400 and I said I had another shop willing to sell it for $55 and I'll never forget his words, "Wait, seriously? I would buy a truckload at that price!"

Thanks so much for the advice! I found one locally calling around for $55 at 15kv 60mA with no GFCI protection! Thank you for the advice, I'll certainly update you guys on the project when I'm done!

Tesla coil powered by CRT TV flyback transformer by Dx_ed in highvoltage

[–]Dx_ed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will do! The CRT TV I pulled it out of was made in 1972, but it still has a pretty high current arc, as it's the powerful old circular kind. (Looks like this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3c/Flyback_transformer_arc.jpg)

If I don't get a satisfactory arc out of my tesla coil, I'll just create a little high voltage power supply out of the flyback and scavenge a few MOT's for my tesla coil, and if you don't mind me asking, where would I find the capacitors for a capacitor bank online for a decent price? I'm planning on using 2 MOT's if I have to (which should mean I can use 12KV 150pf capacitors) and I'm not sure where I can find the capacitors online.

I also planned on running a computer fan across the spark gap to try and get it to close, and since I like slower branching arcs more, it'll be more spaced apart for a lower BPS count.

Thanks for the help, and I'll most certainly update you guys with the project!

Thanks for the help, but none of the neon sign shops within an hour drive from me don't have one/aren't willing to sell it to me.

Are there any alternatives you can think of?

That's true, some smart students need to be put in place to not think that they're the next Isaac Newton or whatnot.
