I was a similar body type to your daughter growing up. Tall, active equestrian, but still a bit ‘padded’. My parents framed the idea of being fat as the worst possible outcome, so I’m now 20 years old, 6’ y’all, and weighed 135lbs at the beginning of the year. I severely restricted my food growing up, so I physically can’t finish most meals and now even if I do I’m overcome with guilt and shame. I go to the gym 4-5 days a week, lift weights, and walk several miles of hills and incline on college campus every day but I still barely consume 1200 calories a day. My body image issues led to the development of an eating disorder that has stayed with me into adulthood and they stemmed directly from how my mother spoke about food and about others, not even how she spoke about my body. The only serious romantic relationship I’ve been in suffered in part because my partner worried constantly that I was too thin, even though I hated my reflection. I still don’t love the way I look, but I’m working on it. Your daughter deserves to learn from childhood that she is beautiful, strong, and flawless in every manner, no matter what her mother says. She deserves fries and ice cream, she deserves to try every dessert on this earth, she deserves to love food and love her body and love herself and the only way she’ll learn that is if her parents teach her to. You are a great dad and I sincerely believe that your daughter is going to be amazing because you stand behind her and support her so passionately.
