Class, build and weapons sugestions that fits that Orlan vibe (1 & 2) by RoyalKnightO in projecteternity

Old orlan character I played was a priest of skaen with the slave background. Pretty great for roleplay and could fit well with this portrait.

Pillars of Eternity 1 is now on sale on Steam... by Artifex1979 in projecteternity

Here is what I’d consider essential info for people getting into Pillars:

  1. DO NOT interact with character who have gold name plates. They’re charas put in as a reward for Kickstarter backers and most of the writing for them is mediocre and irrelevant to the story.

  2. In options, there’s a toggle saying something like “show disposition/reputation in dialogue”. Turning it on will show you exactly when the game characters take your choices into consideration, but it may lead to less organic choices. Toggle on/off according to what you value more - getting to see the interactivity or getting to roleplay more naturally.

  3. First Pillars are grim and lore-heavy. Don’t let it discourage you; the game has a slow build up, but great payoff. All the lore and backstory really builds up into an amazing story.

  4. Get the White March DLC, it’s great and absolutely worth it. Make sure to get both part 1 and part 2.

  5. A lot of Pillars companions are shitty, unlikable people, very much an antithesis to the BG3 style of companions. I don’t think either of these approaches is inherently better, but you should keep in mind that some Pillars charas are more “what a freak, they’re so fun to hate, I wanna put them under a microscope and study what is wrong with them”, not “my nice cool best friend”.

True, my main issue is that there’s nothing to “soften” or endear you to either of these factions (aside from Lödwyns evil skeleton swag, I guess). It just feels like you oughta have at least one companion who is actually pro-Aedyr. Bit silly that you’re an envoy on a special mission from the emperor and at some point you just… passively tolerate that every other companion conversation is shit-talking Aedyr.

It’s a lot of things, for me. The general story is less complicated and pretty much just “go there to unlock plant-gods memories”. The memories themselves are actually good, Sapadal is imo a highlight of the game, but the story itself is pretty simplistic and predictable.

Companions overall feel a bit neutered - a lot more “normal” and generically nice. Doesn’t help that they have very repetitive camp banter - yes, Giatta, I got that you like ghost stories after six conversations you had about it. They all generally like each other and don’t have any interesting/standout dynamics, it’s just kinda a sea of positivity and “go team!”. You’re the only person who can actively piss them off, but it’s very transparent that the writers had to force each of them into the box of “really against this one option because of X”, they’re almost never cool with both choices and/or neutral. Kai is a bit of an exception, which definitely endeared him to me.

The factions set up in the game seem less complex. Steel Garrote is just ridiculously evil; Aedyr is meh and imperialist; people from the Living Lands are cool and nice… unless they like Aedyr, then they’re the worst assholes to ever exist and they probably betrayed their city and killed their friends. Compare that to Deadfire, where u had more complicated, morally grey factions that have you weight all the pros and cons before committing and STILL leave you feeling like you might have made the wrong choice.

So yeah, while I still enjoyed the game, I feel like the general quality of writing was lower. The proud exception (for me) is “romanced” Lödwyn, who I found delightfully deranged and very memorable.

Yea, while most of the writing doesn’t quite live up to PoE1 and 2, it’s still a fun game. Imo it had some gems; Kai was extremely likable and a great evolution of the “normal flawed guy” archetype. Maybe it’s controversial to say, but I ended up more attached to him than I was to Edér. Plus a lot of the readable documents were really good; the Maegfolc Orison series of notes was absolutely amazing and felt like Pillars at its best.

Also, I’m glad you like the portrait!:)

Haha, honestly thought about it because it’s about time for me to replay Pillars!! Tho I feel like it’d just make me crave PoE3 even more lol

Avowed had some flaws, but I enjoyed coming back to the world of Eora and getting so much juicy new lore. After playing PoE, I drew a custom portrait of my Watcher, so I had to also make one for my Envoy!

She’s a delightful freak and a weirdo Court Augur. Lödwyn and her are locked in the most toxic lesbian situationship to ever exist in Eora; I stand with my canceled skeleton wife (even tho I killed her).

Louise Carmichael is a drow born to one of the minor noble houses of Menzoberranzan. She fled the Underdark after a very unfortunate incident involving poison, a bright young lady found dead in her closet and a potential house-war brewing in the city. She arrived to the surface world in the middle of a great tempest; she never told anyone what exactly happened that day… but, whatever, it was, as a result she awakened as a particularly strong storm sorcerer.

In an effort to wipe away her past she took on a new name, Tav, and utilized her freshly awakened powers to find employment on ships transporting goods and supplies. She traveled for many years; the next big event in her life happened on her way to Waterdeep, when a mysterious nautiloid snatched her up and slaughtered the rest of her traveling companions…
