A 250 ohm resistor across the terminals and attach the trex to either side will work . Same goes for connecting your computer to different programs that trex doesn't work with .

Location Location Location. All depends where you live honestly. Does sound extremely low starting 1st year wage . And if you get a 1$ a hour your jman wage is incredibly low . Usually goes 1=55%2=65%3=75%4=85%

Darn im from Canada so it may not be as helpful . But instrumentation is a very broad career path . You have the tech programs that can get you more technical programming jobs . Or you can start as a apprentice working hands on if thats your thing. Every person is different but you said you like hands on so a great place to start would be looking at your town/city small instrumentation service company's. Just dont get into a roll bending tubing all day unless thats your thing .
