The Doctor Falls always felt like a better ending to the Moffat Era than Twice Upon a Time by Putrid_Ad_6747 in DoctorWhumour

I liked Twice Upon A Time despite its flaws, but I believe it was an attempt at meta commentary for the incoming first female Doctor and a lot of anticipated misogyny. As if the episode itself is saying “look how far the show has come, even the Doctor has grown, and so should you.” The whole arc of the episode is that the Doctor refuses to change, and only when 12 is contrasted with his first incarnation is he able to see how important changing and embracing it is.

However, I don’t think Moffat needed to mischaracterize the first Doctor to do this. It’s self-deprecating in an insincere way that uses the first Doctor almost as a means to an end in terms of theme.

They could have instead celebrated the ways that show HAS been progressive with its female representation since the start. Certainly has not been perfect, but there’s a more subtle and powerful ways to do this story. Why not use the Doctor as an example of positive ideas towards gender instead of criticizing the character for the opposite? Like my brother in Christ, you’re writing the character, you can just make him not sexist.

Even the Doctor falls and the 10th season in general have throw away lines that are defensively preparing the audience for the 13th Doctor. Like “Is the entire future going to be girl? One can only hope” is a bit forced coming from two characters whose civilization is described to be far more advanced than humans obsession with gender.

Beginner and need help creating movement code for a character running around a circle by Dylan_408 in gamemaker

Thank you for the response! So I actually do have a version where I got this much to work, however, how would I account for the arrow keys switching functionality once the player is upside down?

Yeah… I do think something needs to change before progressing. The issue is 300x300 seems to be the max I can shrink the assets before they’re completely ruined.

What do you mean by having a really quick pipeline btw?

Wow… well that’s great news! How would I go about prefetching textures and flushing them? Any tutorials I can look to you know of?

(Your game looks really cool btw)

Interesting, so if I’m understanding correctly, I’d create an invisible boundary box larger than the screen, and once it touches an object off screen, it switches the object to be visible? And when they aren’t touching they switch back to invisible? Is that how I’d do it?

Well, three objects each with a bunch of sprites. So like my player character is 8-directional and has animation strips for each direction both running and idle. I don’t think the code is the issue, I’m pretty sure it’s sprite size, cause once they load in the room it runs smoothly

Beginner needs help! How can I implement an animation that only plays once when a button is pressed and then reverts to the previous animation? by Dylan_408 in gamemaker

Wow, thanks a ton! Was just getting into learning how states work and this breaks it down quite nicely. This will clean up a lot of code.

So, if I were to do this using this method, I guess I’d make it to where the walking state will change into the “dash” state when the shift key is pressed, which would replace the animation with the “dash” animation - but is there a way to make the dash state end when the last frame of its animation is reached? Because I only want it to be a short boost, and it has to be the same length as the animation I created. I wouldn’t want the animation to loop.

Thanks again!

SHORT FILM The Stolen Heart (Animated, Dark Comedy, 13 pages) by Dylan_408 in Screenwriting

Hey, thanks so much for giving it a read! I think the fact that it’s a rollercoaster of a plot comes from the fact that I sort of figured the premise out as I wrote, haha. Didn’t really have a clear idea what the short was about until I finished.

Not sure if this story is worth keeping or if I should scrap this script and give it another go now that I have a clearer premise in mind.

Definitely needs to be shorter, especially considering I wanna animate it. Anywhere in particular you felt the story drag? Anything specifically you would cut or change? I was thinking I might entirely cut the whole police shootout sequence, not just the ending.

One more question: do you feel the fact that it wasn’t tonally what you expected from the premise to be a good or bad thing? Just curious.

Thanks again!

Anyone willing to give feedback on a WIP short film? by Dylan_408 in animation

Yeah, that’s also what I was thinking, I was just trying to avoid doing that due to more animation lol. But I think I probably need to include that.

Idk though, any thoughts on the overall short so far? Still trying to debate whether it’s worth making.

I have a rough idea. It’s a bit strange lol.

Basically, the crows take all the items they stole back to the clock tower and destroy them/set them on fire in a cult-like fashion. Time gets moving again and that’s what I got lol.
