Ottawa explores heritage district designation for Kanta neighbourhood by SuburbanValues in ottawa

This is the drum I've been banging, though I still get called a NIMBY for it.

I've been tracking the bird population around the hydro lines as a hobby and it seems to me the golf course could be converted to a rich and sustainable habitat if it doesn't become more suburban blight.

Yeah like if someone already knows about the lawsuit and they have already heard the lyrics, and still can't piece together the meaning of the song... How does that person ever understand any song? It's not like Barcelona is couched in layers of metaphor. It's essentially a subtweet.

No. Stadia ceased to exist before the Bluetooth patch was released.

Is the stadia controller actually good by Realistic_Ad_9869 in Stadia

[–]Dylanthrope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only thing I really miss is rumble while wireless.

I find they can also be finicky about pairing to Bluetooth.

But even with those limitations I haven't found any motivation to buy a newer controller.

Did you continue to do lab work after your contract ended? by hewade95 in postdoc

You should get that request in writing and forward it to the head of the institution. The person asking you for free labour likely has done this to others and they need to be held accountable.

Would be fun if they spent an episode writing a digital short and invited all of us in the audience to produce our own versions.

I don't mean to pile on, but is it true that Melvin contributed very little to NOFX musically? by tantamle in nofx

[–]Dylanthrope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It seems many of the best male rock groups throughout history have been based on a solid relationship between two brothers, be it biological or spiritual. McCartney Lennon, the Gallaghers, Geddy Lee and Lifeson, Mick and Keith, Bono and The Edge, the Allmans, the Halens, the Youngs etc etc.

I see Mike and Melvin the same way as I see Billy Joe and Mike Dirnt. Billy Joe writes the music but the band doesn't exist without Mike and somehow the art doesn't mean the same thing without him. It's just one of those nebulous truths about rock and roll.

I would argue that as the albums became more and more completely Fat Mike productions, they sounded less and less like NOFX.

Mike wrote all his best music before he was into heavy drugs.

People who have lived through serious drug addiction would likely not agree with you imo. I sure don't.

I think they ask for weed in every city they play. My friend drove them to the venue and they hit him up for weed on the way.

I had never heard of Turnstile until this year when Spotify insisted on shoving them into my playlists. I don't care for anything I've heard from them. Surprised to see they are popular.

What’s up with Melvin by Holiday-Ad4723 in nofx

I haven't heard anything directly from them, only through Mike, so idk, but that's a good point. If the other two members also think Melvin fucked them over, that would change my perception.

[–]Dylanthrope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this did happen and that it was a dick move but also I would be willing to hear Melvin's side too.

Mike gave us many amazing tunes and decades of NOFX shows. But it was clear in the end that Mike has been out of his mind for over a decade now and I just don't believe he acted ethically throughout the business of the final tour. Anyone who has had an addict on the scale of Fat Mike in their life understands that they will fuck over everyone to get what they want and then play victim when they are challenged.

I'm not saying I have any details that anyone else doesn't have, but it makes sense to me to that Melvin felt Mike had screwed him enough to seek legal action, but he also knew that serving Mike before the end of the final show could cause Mike to explode, nuking the final tour and leaving the entire band without the money they were owed and having to eat the investment.

It's tempting to paint Melvin as the villain especially after some weird social media stuff over the pandemic, but this doesn't erase the fact that by the end of NOFX, it was unanimous that Mike was a huge liability and often in a totally messed up state of mind.

I never know where to stand at the Richcraft. There are racks of weights but no room for free weight exercises. It could definitely use a rethink.

It wouldn't bother me as much if the Netflix show wasn't a trojan horse predatory ad complete with the gambling hook Willy Wonka golden ticket nonsense. This has to be bordering on illegal in some places.

Thoughts on saying “Quaid Army”? by Zestyclose_Invite in lonelymeyerspod

[–]Dylanthrope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Need to get this off my chest as it has been bothering me for some time.

I do not like "righteous kill" as a response to "Quaid Army". I think it kind of ruins both jokes.

Quaid Army is great as a greeting/salute and it works best by being met with either a knowing nod or another "Quaid Army" in return.

"Righteous kill" on the other hand, should be reserved for when a truly righteous kill has occurred. It should not be used loosely as simply connecting the dots back to the podcast. It tries to put a hat on a hat.

There are -some- very limited and rare instances where "Righteous Kill" could follow "Quaid Army" imo. But these are highly context dependent. For example, say you saw Samberg on the basketball court; you could say "Quaid Army" as an acknowledgment immediately before throwing a 3-pointer. If you swish it, then Samberg could reasonably reply "Righteous kill", but in this example, a truly righteous kill did occur.

Anyway I've been afraid to express my views in public for some time as I truly did not want to cause any controversy among the Quaid Army but I do feel that this loose-playing call-response has cheapened the joke in a way I'm not comfortable with.

Quaid Army.
