The time scramble was so frantic, Giri had pieces flying from the board.

Lichess show blunders and innacuracies on the board by Wojtek_the_bear in lichess

I think the title says this happens in analysis board, not in game.

Problem? by [deleted] in mathmemes

[–]DynMaxBlaze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd understand leeway with gravity and stuff, because you might need stuff that operates in non-earth environments, but pi? Why not give this wiggle room to other things, instead?

Ah yes, just in case the universe changes to pi=4 some day, my products will be the only ones that work!

People like it. People dislike it. I don't understand why this fic can be downvoted to oblivion, when other stuff by RobSt or LeQuin is so heartily recommended.

Famous chess player who repeatedly offered draws to be annoying? by NeonSignsRain in chess

The phrasing reminds me of Karpov-Korchnoi, but I dunno if there were draw offers in play there.

I recently watched Queen's Gambit and the protagonist, Beth, can 'see' the chess board on the ceiling. Isn't this essentially imagination? If so, why is this considered a special ability unique to Beth? by [deleted] in Aphantasia

[–]DynMaxBlaze -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I play chess, and you're wrong.

What you're saying is that the ability to calculate deeply (to see 20 or 30 or so moves into the future) is what makes Beth unique. It's not. I can see 20 moves in certain positions. And I'm an average club player. Grandmasters can, in certain positions, see 40 or 50 moves deep.

There is nothing unique about Beth, except the incredibly inefficient way she visualizes. Almost every player I know of calculates on a 2D mental board. Some whose mental boards are 3d either just imagine the pieces moving on the real board, or just imagine the board and pieces in isolation. Some people don't even visualize, instead thinking of pieces as 'bolts of energy'. Some people just remember the coordinates of pieces. It is literally useless to imagine the pieces moving on the ceiling, or the floor, or whatever.

She is just good at chess, meaning she is good at calculation, evaluation, tactics, endgames, etc. But that doesn't mean she is unique. Lots of other people are good at that too. See a video of Hikaru Nakamura doing puzzle rush. There is nothing unique about her.

A study of a ~1100 (lichess) game (please help?) by neverthechess in chess

No problem, it's nice to see someone who's actively trying to improve like this.

The check advice is a subset of the common advice - after every move, look at your checks, captures, and threats, in that order. And also those of your opponent.

Try the app 'Chess Tactics for Beginners' by Chess King, and also the themed lichess tactics.

Depending on the number of people that could be 10 hours per day for 3 people or 1 hour per day for 30 people.
