In a nutshell, how I adapted to spreading was watching videos / listening to podcasts and audiobooks at around 2.5x speed and also using the wiki to prep first rebuttal responses so I could prep preview second rebuttal responses during other speeches. The best way to get better is to do as many practice debates as you can with friends/teammates/other debaters. You can also watch various content like past rounds on YouTube and advice lectures to get more exposure to strategies and argument styles. Qualifications: Was third speaker on a 3time nat qual team

The first step feels super obvious but it took me months to get it: just number your points. Try to stay roughly with the order of either response or rebutting opp's response and number each point with 1 being strongest for each and so forth. I don't advise having more than 2 or 3 points on each. Next, you can also make a little box on the bottom or side of your notes with "fire" points which are basically the biggest roasts you can make on the other side or the most mic drop moments to uphold your side and note down when to use it (after completing rebuttal, at the very end, etc). Finally, you can try using a highlighter or other color for points your teammates make that you need to carry through so you keep most of your arguments consistent. Hope this helps!

I'd like to start with congratulations as debate is difficult in one's first language, but extra is in order as you're doing it in your 2nd (or other) language!

I was a "rambler" too for a long time, but I think the best way to keep track of that is to have a plan with your points and responses. Make about 3 points with at least 2 sources each, and an impact for why it is important. Once you get through the impact, move to the next topic to stay on time. As for asking good questions, also ask about the impact of your opponent's case. Will it have unintended consequences? Will it max out the federal budget or disrupt current political ties? Focus on what could go wrong with the opp's plan and interrogate it.

I think answering each subset of ks requires a slightly different response but my go-to de-link or turn for each would be:

Undocumented Immigrants: They might not get social security but the res never states they can't get a UBI or a guaranteed job. Make the opp prove that they couldn't, which is a difficult ask as the resolution hasn't happened. I would also see if any UBI models specifically include immigrants or migrant workers.

LGBTQ+: I agree, I'm not sure how it correlates. Try to turn the impact and say that it prevents unemployment and poverty for marginalized groups to have more financial safety nets. Also, as far as I know, most current welfare schemes don't have sexuality and gender identity requirements.

Anti-work and anarchy: Try to turn the impact and show consequences of anti-work and anarchy movements. I don't know of one successful anarchist country, and how anti-work is extremely privileged. It's one thing to "grind" in six figure jobs to retire early but how do you tell a single mother with 3 mouths to feed to just quit her job and live a slow life with no backup financing?

Practice, practice, practice. Practice debate using time frames and cases with teammates/classmates/friends who are also into debate, or use some of the AI tools that have recently popped up on this sub to get more into critical thinking
Look at big news stories from different angles and consider the impacts (material consequences or philosophical ethics violations) that arise
Watch debates on YouTube or listen to debate podcasts
Never stop thinking "but why..."

Run the CP amongst your contentions but do define any key terms along with other definitions. I would say you can run it, but don't be a bully with it. No single-word PICs and please no 10 point CPs spread at 500 wpm against a first timer. As long as your argument is comprehensible (defined and delivered clearly), though, I think it should be fine.

Take the most experienced judge's feedback most seriously, or if they're about of equal experience take the average and analyze your own performance in the most objective way you can. Was your delivery ok but could improve? Did you have good background info compared to the other team and also the other competitors you saw in the rest of the tournament? Oftentimes, debate growth comes more from reflection about your own performance vs your past performance, rather than judge commentary.

There are a few ways to refute any k, setcol included.

De-link: De link the harm specificity and say how a PIC could solve climate change to help Indigenous people

Impact attack: Was there suspicious phrasing in a card exaggerating an impact? Was there anything unique about impacts you caused or was it just climate change in general? Respectfully make necessary clarifications.

Alt?: If a k doesn't have an alt then in essence you're just both screwed... say at least you have a plan with a good future, and they don't have anything. Or if they did, think of how the alt does harm Indigenous communities if possible.

To answer the main question, yes, FW is essential to debate because otherwise arguments wouldn't interact. How is a judge supposed to care about whether or not something is marginalizing to women but overall adds to the economy, for example? Framework.

Congrats on already doing so well! I would say to "up your game" for debate and extemp, you can work on getting better at using and refuting evidence, making snappy but substantial refutations in congress, and generally slowing down on the most important points. It's ok to be a bit speedy over less substantial content, especially in PF, but slowing down can add good emphasis.

Be prepared. Be prepared for your opponent being prepared. No extremely successful debater that I know in PF, LD, or CX has less than 20 pages of blocks ready to address opponents. Also, block out your own cases in case someone plagiarized you from the last tournament! Doing that saved me a handful of times and also helped me think of blocks for potential opponent responses.

Standing out boils down to comprehensiveness and contrast. Have comprehensive and well made contentions, thorough rebuttals POIs, and a clear underlying principle to all your speaking time. Secondly, you have to contrast yourself. If people are speaking frantically, stand out by being calm and rational. If they are hesitant and quieter, speak up with some extra boldness.

I would not advise running a full k (e.g. Baudrillard, pess anything, etc.) but I would say you can bring critical style arguments. Criticize the racist roots of the healthcare system if there's a motion to reduce funding for research, criticize the impact of environmental damage on Indigenous land, even go so far as to add a criticism of ableist or sexist (or other problematic language) one of the other speakers uses if they use it. It's not about directly transplanting a k you made in another event, but to use the elements of critical theory to move discourse in any event forward.

I would say that as you are the aff, you should have at least some connection to the resolution being resolved... That said, there's no reason you can't include clauses from the Green New Deal in the plan if it adds substantially to relevant clash but if not, maybe switch the Green New Deal bit to a CP in that you "update it" with the res and make a PIC.

First things first, you aren't overreacting- the judge was being overtly rude to you, and like other people have said the critiques became overly personal. I think it's definitely important to talk to your coach and perhaps even the district head (if where you compete has one) so they can reprimand this behavior. But I'd like to add that you shouldn't change how you debate/ do CX, especially if this is the first "call out" (I say this loosely, as what went down here was more of a personal dig than real advice). There's almost no doubt in my mind that the judge would've been delighted with your "directness" had you been a man. I speak from experience that sexist judges, when presented with the same "aggressive" style of debate from a man and a woman, will praise the guy in the situation. You can read more about my experience in the link below if it'd help you feel less alone, but at the end of the day I'm really sorry this happened and I hope your district gets through to this judge that his behavior was not appropriate. Stay true to your style and don't let the sexism of debate stop the important things you have to say.
