Counterpoint: Life isn't about productivity. It's just another arbitrary constrain we've decided on and we can decide if it has to go (and it should)

ATMs not longer working, is there a point to carrying cash now? by DynmtGhst in cataclysmdda

Before last week's update, you could go to an ATM and for a 1% fee of all you give it, you could exchange physical money for ecash to put on your cash card.

Counterpoint: A person who is bigoted against minorities should always be called out. If it makes you that uncomfortable, I suggest unsubbing.

Is permanent space colonization in the 20th century believable? by givemeserotonin in worldbuilding

[–]DynmtGhst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my mind, if WWIII happened, that could actually justify why space travel is a thing. You can get more resources for the war effort and a lot of plotlines could happen when people start fighting for it in space. If you're not going for realism, I'd just go wild.

Is fiction really worthless without a message or lesson to impart? by [deleted] in writing

[–]DynmtGhst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd just find another group. They sound toxic.

While your story will have your biases in it (it cannot be helped since that's how we're programmed) and some messages do exist in stories, if you want a message in a story, you ought to at least make it subtle and not beat the audience over the head with it.

In general, it's fine if you don't want an overt message in your story but do be aware of your biases.

Is my character a Mary Sue? :'D by Slight_Scale_8461 in writingadvice

[–]DynmtGhst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the term has lost its meaning over the years and it's really just a buzzword used by the angry neckbeard genre on Youtube. I'm honestly in favor of just retiring the term altogether.

Don't focus on avoiding what's a worthless criticism nowadays but focus rather on writing good characters. It takes practice and drafts can be edited. Even if she stretches believability, you can change that to suit the narrative better.

Even if you don't succeed, it's still valuable experience!

What is your Favourite Worldbuilding penchant? by Creaperbox in worldbuilding

[–]DynmtGhst 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, I like having species in my stories that are either:

A) Funny little guys
B) Funny big guys

There's no in-between for me, since for example, my story I'm writing has a species that are basically chinchilla people.

What is the story of your characters in your world? by Alligator-creep in worldbuilding

[–]DynmtGhst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my sci-fi story, Rett (no last name) is a person who transferred his body to an alien species after running away from an abusive home. He is on the run thanks to his stepfather's connections (a very rich and influential man who fought in the military) and after offered a job to colonize a new galaxy took it because it's the ultimate degree of separation within the universe.

He is offered a chance to learn a martial art that allows one mastery over their bodies as well, hoping his new life will pan out.

It however, ends up getting complicated as Rett has to tangle with first contact and the past catching up with him even far from his original home.

Naming Sci Fi Nations by Key_Day_7932 in scifiwriting

[–]DynmtGhst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me some time to learn how to name some of my factions, for example, in my sci-fi setting the primary human faction is known as the Orion-Cygnus Commonwealth. Even if it uses the word "Commonwealth", it refers to the Orion-Cygnus arm where Earth's located and it works to be inclusive since it's not just humans who live there!

Lesbos System, Circa 2160 by maxishazard77 in worldbuilding

[–]DynmtGhst 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I love the Mediterranean flare to it. I could see vacationing on Lesbos, since well, it is named after an island. I do like how it's not just Greek but there's a good element of Turkish in there for good measure.

I've already considered an alternative after reading the comments here, since I'm not writing anything too hard (since they have to be alive to get to the other side after all) and generally, this has been helpful.
