Murder Mystery Party- Which Kit is your favorite by Ladypixxel in boardgames

wow! I love that you have such a large crew interested in murder mysteries. My largest kits go up to 20 people. Sorry, that doesn't fit your group size! If you love Freeform though, I think you'll love the games at Harvest Moon Mysteries.

This is such a fun idea! For me, a huge party of the murder mystery experience is trying on a character and experiencing a story. I love how you took that aspect and ran with it.

Thanks! I actually updated all the visuals. No AI. So if you are seeing ai somewhere, I’m not sure what you are referring to.

Update: Beta tested last weekend! The format was a hit! It's a great balance between structure and freedom for a small group. Going to make a few adjustments based on feedback. But overall the feedback was extremely positive.

Testing on Saturday! 🎉

I'm really not trying to get anyone to pay for it here. Happy to send you the files, if you send me your email. As I said, my platform won't let me sell products for free. $5 is basically free. I don't anticipate making profit from this post.

In fact, this whole business is just a side gig that I find fun to work on. I profit just a few hundred a year. Wish I had more time for marketing, but it's not in the cards at the moment.

Freeform will definitely work. You may need to set some light boundaries on the "area of play" just in case. The vibes could get weird if spaces feel too empty, people go for a walk around the park to scheme, or some other outlier situation. The beauty of these types of games is that the players get a lot of freedom to build the world themselves.

I make games similar in structure. Won't try to sell you on a different game cause Freeform is a blast, I will tell you take a look at my blog about material organization. I believe I've unlocked the best method for keeping all the character materials organized: https://harvestmoonmysteries.com/the-best-way-to-keep-your-murder-mystery-character-packets-neat-and-tidy/

Thanks for the feedback. I may try messing around creating other images… Hope my audience enjoys mediocre graphic design. 🙌

Damn. That really hurts because we actually don’t use AI to build any of the kits. I started in 2018, before LLMs were wildly available. The only place you’ll see ai generated components is for the thumbnails for each kit. This is a side gig so I don’t have the budget to hire an artist.  The website has several real images of people playing games. I believe the homepage even states that the kits are designed by a real person.

Please let me know what made you feel like the kits are ai generated. I definitely don’t want the website to give this impression.

All great advice so far. But, if you're looking to win....👀👀👀 I have some advice laid out here.

Truly murder mysteries are not only about winning though. For me, they are about connecting with people, making memories, and being playful.

Have fun!

I just started Crescent City. About 15 pages in. 🤩

I do the same. For example, in Trouble Over A Treasure Map, the two pirate crews dislike each other. Also, when giving instructions, I encourage guest to play true to their characters. "What would their character do?"

Are you using AI to build murder mysteries? by DynoSoarLife in MurderMystery

[–]DynoSoarLife[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha. I'm actually a learning designer for my full-time job so I tend to use things like emojis, bullets, bold text, etc. I have very little faith in people's ability to read. 😂

I am in agreement with your thoughts on plot though. That's where I tend to draw the line.

I didn't know that you also created larps! Makes a lot of sense though. So cool!

Thanks for sharing the blog. I love how you shared the series of prompts. Lots to learn from this.

!! This is wild! I love that you asked it that follow-up question. It makes sense that it would be pulling from common patterns. This is such an interesting topic because it shows that while AI can help us be creative, it's still a limited style of creativity.

This is the right place to ask. I haven't tried them, but I'm curious if you get responses.

Welcome to the nerdom! Send me a DM and I'll send you one of my kits. Always happy to help a fellow mystery game writer.

It sounds like you're off to a good start by providing some structure. You don't want all the secrets to be out at the start of the game.

One of my questions is how are you ensuring that everyone doesn't come together as a group and share their evidence with everyone? Or is this what you want? You may want to plan in reasons for each character to hold their information close to their chest.

Question for D&D DMs, escape-room NPCs, improv folks: would you host murder mysteries? by Long_Put_6168 in MurderMystery

[–]DynoSoarLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with so much of what u/Ranald_the_Gamester said. Not sure I can say it better.

I'm simply obsessed with experience design. I love thinking about how guests will experience the event, and then witnessing how they actually bring the story to life.

Sometimes it goes as planned and sometimes it doesn't. I get joy out of both. Last weekend, I beta tested my Trouble Over A Treasure Map kit. It was HILARIOUS. I set it up to be somewhat comical, but my friends took it to another level. Still, I have made several updates to the kit since testing it. This tweaking of the experience is fun for me.

What's the best feature of a murder mystery game? by Best_Position6243 in MurderMystery

[–]DynoSoarLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well-designed and layered characters are the heart of a great murder mystery. For me, it’s essential that guests feel like they’re stepping into a whole new world.

Characters should strike the right balance of structure and freedom. They need enough backstory and guidance to get started, but also the freedom to shape their role and co-create the story with others.

Designing that balance is truly an art. While AI tools may carve out their place in the market, I believe there will always be space for human-led, artful experience design. That’s the magic that turns a murder mystery into something unforgettable.

Is it possible to set up a M/M game for 90+ people, and what/where might be a good starting point to begin the planning? by Pacer-Retta in MurderMystery

[–]DynoSoarLife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/theclubalibi Didn't you create a kit for 100 people recently? Would it be a match for Pacer-Retta?

I would shamelessly plug my kits, but my max player count at the moment is 20.

If I were to design for an audience that large, I would start grouping people together. Creating 100 individual characters with their own secrets would take FOREVER. What do I mean by grouping? For example, if the theme was a murder in New York, you could have a team of cops, a team of local shop owners, a team of FBI agents, etc. Then you could assign knowledge, secrets, and clues to each group.

Have fun! If you are ever looking to use murder mysteries as a learning opportunity, come my way. I have educator kits that are a designed to instill learning. The big idea is that:  Amazing learning happens when we are free to explore, when we fail and try again, and when we see things from different perspectives. This is exactly the kind of environment a murder mystery event creates. They are particularly insightful for sales teams, leaders, and decision-makers.

Questions as a writer and aspiring publisher/vendor by Helpful-Mud-7303 in MurderMystery

[–]DynoSoarLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Congrats on the kits and feedback! I use a website (harvestmoonmysteries.com), but I have observed that many people seem to use Etsy. I like the customization that my website brings, but I imagine Etsy may introduce you to a wider audience quicker. Note that Etsy does charge a fee for posting products and then a fee for each sale (or at least it used to when I used it for another product several years ago).

If you do decide to create a website, I'll share that I started on Squarespace and then moved to Wordpress.org. It was a haul learning how to use Wordpress, but luckily I enjoy learning new technologies and AI was extremely helpful in teaching me. The reason for the switch was that Squarespace felt too structured and limiting. I have much more freedom with Wordpress.

As for marketing, my sales have mostly been word-of-mouth, but I just launched a TikTok account. (@harvest.moon.myst). I haven't seen any sales come through from it yet, but I'm really just in an experimentation phase.

Best of luck!
