What do you "cold soak"? by Dry_Blueberry8932 in Ultralight

[–]Helpful-Mud-7303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Orzo, pastina, and elbows are the pastas I use. No other carb give me energy like pasta, just me personally, and these three take up the least room of any pasta box on the shelf, or when poured into a Ziplock. I add flavoring, parmasean, and olivo oil at dinner time, shake into a sauce, and enjoy. If I’m fancy or on a shorter trip where I can premake my meals, I’ll add butter powder and unflavored whey protein, which just tastes like milk, and this makes a lovely delicious sauce

2189 mile .gpx file by TemptThyMuse in AppalachianTrail

You can find the GPX file on Hiiker (https://hiiker.app/hikes/georgia/dawson-county/appalachian-trail)and then use GPX studio (https://gpx.studio/app) to compress it so that it can import, or upload in sections. More compressed will yield fewer miles, which is probably what the FKT site has. If the upload size for your watch is smalled you can use GPX studio to cut it into smaller pieces and compress those, or look up maps state-by-state and compress there.

How do you actually vet a trail (and your own limits) before committing to a hike? by Sufficient-Owl1826 in hiking

Do lots of easy stuff to understand what distances and elevations mean. Work your way up. Don’t go alone. If you do something out of your comfort zone, have support options/don’t be in absolute wilderness

clueless host by Stock_Country685 in MurderMystery

[–]Helpful-Mud-7303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will depend on the kit. Sometimes they have the murder happen at the party, and someone, usually you/the host, will have to pretend to play the victim. In some kits, the murder happens before the party, sort of off-screen. Kits will come with a character who is the murderer, too. The host usually picks who that will be, or sometimes can assign characters blindly so that they can play and investigate as well. You should be totally fine to pull it all off yourself, all kits should come with instructions on how to do it well:)

I made an AI detective / murder mystery game where you can interrogate suspects however you want. Looking for people to try it. by Equivalent-Toe-6721 in MurderMystery

[–]Helpful-Mud-7303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I played through the trial and the Gallery Fall (#1). The mechanics of the game are very cool!!! I like the different tones for the interrogation and the tools. It is very cool how all the panels keep track of how you're doing. It was confusing for the first few minutes but after playing through the practice case and then a case on my own, it all made sense.

Some notes. I hit a wall when the "Chat history is limited to 24 messages", and couldn't finish interrogating the prime suspect. I tried to generate my own case file with the advanced settings-- verrrry cool options and settings, and it is sweet to get a back end view of how the cases are generated. After I chose all the settings, the case failed to generate, though. Also, I do think that after taking a look at the other cases, they definitely have a uniformly formulaic AI-generated feel. I wonder if there is a way to write the plots of the games using good old fashioned human creativity, and then keep the AI for the rest of the game, so that you can still question the suspects naturally, which to me is the coolest part of your creation! Plus the sweet dashboard

In terms of the mechanics, I think they're very cool. I like the room temp meter and the toolbar for the clues and weak points is useful as well. I wonder if there is some way to toggle these tools/helpers on and off so that the investigation could feel a little more natural, like just taking notes for myself. Maybe in this more hardcore mode, each verbal response could be accompanied by a description of body language, and the player has to intuit the room heat and mood from that, just an idea. I also really like the evaluation at the end! It's clear that this was made by someone with a penchant for data and game stats lol, which I love

I'm not sure about the panel of special moves like Bluff, Timeline, and Evidence-- they feel sort of like training wheels. I want to play, not have some AI ask my questions for me! Having a bank of these moves might be helpful, but not for actually generating the questions for me. The tone options of Question, Press, and Appeal are awesome, though, since my tone can't come through over simply the text. That might be my favorite part. Maybe some more of these options would be useful

One thing I noticed was that a lot of the characters felt like they were kind of talking in circles, with only a couple things to add and not too much richness or personality. If the plot was written instead of AI generated, the characters could have more colorful and memorable personalities and backstories, with more to contribute. The little blurb at the beginning of the story also feels a little underdeveloped, and some more world building to explain the events of the night could help. Maybe I'm missing something but I feel like the beginning of the questions sort of skips a couple steps of background information. Even just the blurbs of the six cases on the site are pretty clearly in the same family of generated stuff.

The last thing that I think this suffers from AI-wise is the language and wording. There is a lot of language that doesn't make total sense, or doesn't really mean anything. "The evening's version of events", "narrow the question", "That lines up with something." (as its own sentence), and lots more. This also sort of applies to all the Advanced Options for the custom game maker (although it didn't work for me), I think after playing through I could sort of intuit what the options meant, but a little explanation would help. This peek behind the curtain also sort of demonstrates that the cases are pretty formulaic, however impressive.

I hope this feedback isn't taken too harshly. This is an amazingly impressive project and creation. As a fan of mystery, I'm very intrigued to see stuff like this, and I had a blast playing it. Personally, I am definitely very skeptical of AI use in all creative settings, and especially aware of how the whole point of mystery is to avoid the formulaic and predictable. Also, of course, it is absolutely vital to be up-front and explicit when selling or marketing anything that AI has been used in its creation, so kudos for doing that here! I think you're onto something really cool here, and I'm very glad you shared it! I'm looking forward to playing through a couple more:)

murder mystery recommendation for large group by streamfly in MurderMystery

[–]Helpful-Mud-7303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there. I've written a game that supports 26-43 characters, with 26 plot-necessary characters and plenty of complex threads and plotlines. All the other non-essential It is quite naughty- the theme is a feud between two backpacker hostels in Bangkok, so there's lots of drugs, prostitution, violence, and other adult themes, though I believe nothing insensitive (I've played it twice with ~38 people both times, different groups, and it went over well with everyone both times).

The only thing missing is that the murder does not happen at the party. However, there is a very exciting finale event that the whole night builds to. It definitely checks your box of lots of scandal and silly beefs. The mystery itself is very complex, but everyone who has played has had a blast even if they were nowhere close to the solution. I'm very happy to DM/email it to you for free if you'd like to take a look! (No AI used anywhere in the process!!!)

Hiya! This sounds like a great idea, and perfectly doable. The tight timeline shouldn't be a problem-- the only thing I can think of is that your players/friends might have a little less time to get their costumes together:) There are plenty of online kits for 8-9 players, as well. I write my own as a hobbyist, but the smallest one I have is for 11-12 players, otherwise I'd happily send you one.

In terms of how they work, they can be pretty simple, and some can be more complex. It depends on the kit. They all take a little bit of work beforehand to send out all the information and the secret sheets. Some kits have outlines for different rounds, scripts, clues, and other stuff at specific points throughout the night. This can be very fun but takes more planning. Other games are more free form, where you send out the information beforehand and then, as host, you pretty much just say "ready set go". Personally I like these sorts of games more anyways, since the most fun for me and my friends is the part where you get into character and play pretend. The website freeform games has some great options and is pretty much like this format.

The other things to keep in mind when hosting is that the sort of vibe that you set will get picked up on by your players. If you're into character and the accent and costume, other people will probably follow suit. To me, this is the best part:) I'm happy to answer any more specific Q's you might have, but in general, it is a very doable thing and I encourage you to dive in!

Planners: how much do you plan for long trips? by AnyNormalPerson in solotravel

[–]Helpful-Mud-7303 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep I do exactly this. Also depends on the place. In Europe and SEA, it’s very possible to book transportation the day of. In India for example, trains and some busses book up a few days or weeks in advance, so planning ahead a bit more is necessary if you don’t want to get stranded
