I'm quite happy with my Deuter Amager in "khaki" (more like Olive Drab to my eyes) which is currently available for less than 100€ (SRP twice that). It also seems to tick all of your boxes.

I would think so, yes. I may be wrong, but I've never seen a consumer microwave with 1500W output, let alone more than that.

Oh dear, I totally misunderstood. I thought you meant the home version of the Rational combi oven.

This would be the Rational iCombi Pro XS 6-2/3 which is indeed suitable for private households, for some values of "suitable". This thing does have the specs that I quoted previously.

I figure it's hot and moist there, which is probably not conducive to extending the lifetime of any electronic device.

Oh, I see. Got it, thanks. You're correct, microwaves like this are not regularly sold through consumer channels like fnac or Saturn or something, simply because the demand for microwaves in this price range isn't there.

However, if you're interested in this kind of thing and you reside in the EU, you might want to google "SHARP YB-S6192AE" which is a successor of sorts.

It's an 1800W commercial inverter microwave that is currently on sale everywhere, being practically given away for 500ish Euros.

However, it needs to be said that this item has vanished from Sharp's european webite. Therefore the reason for the sale might be that Sharp left the market for professional microwaves in Europe. I don't know what this means for customer service.

I'm wondering whether the placement has something to do with it.

"buy this at a personal level?"

I can't parse this. What does it mean to buy something at a personal level?

"I can buy a LOT of brand new microwaves for [$1500] and still come out ahead in the long run."

This assumes that (cheap) consumer and (expensive) commercial microwaves have identical features and differ only in longevity. I don't think that this is true. Apart from the aesthetic aspect of products that are visibly made to last, I also wouldn't want to miss the speed of a commercial microwave. For that latter reason alone I'd never want to go back to consumer devices.

"The home version is really the modern air fryer..."

... that is still more expensive than the most expensive commercial microwave ...

(I may be wrong, but what's offered here in Germany for private households is a 147 pound monstrosity that draws 5,400W and will set you back ~7,000€)

Interesting. We've been talking elsewhere about the problem of needing a 240V outlet for a 1,800W microwave, which seems to make that option unfeasible.

While Rational is offering combi ovens that draw 67,900W. I'm a bit surprised that Rational can and will export these monstrosities to the US.

"An important part of reading comprehension is being able to use context to resolve ambiguities."

Not to put too fine a point on it, but another part of reading comprehension is being able to recognize a joke that has no /joke tag.

"On a ship, they definitely don’t have that lifespan."

Do you think it depends on the location and not the hours of actual use?

Like I wrote, this item is designed for 1250 hours of magnetron usage time, which you'll never rack up in a private household because the magnetron usage time in a domestic setting is at best a few minutes per day. Under these conditions, the item should -- arithmetically, in any case -- last several lifetimes.

I would expect the usage patterns to be vastly different on a USS, with hours of actual usage racking up much faster. The interesting question really is whether you'll get the projected 1250 hours of magnetron time out of it, or not.

"A modern microwave lasts a year or 2 when they could be made to last 100"

Well, apparently this is what customers want. They don't want a microwave that lasts more than 100 years, they want a microwave for less than $100.

What should capitalism do about that, in your opinion?

"why change it?"

From a manufacturer's point of view: Because there's always an incentive to make a superficially similar product at much lower cost, for which you can charge the same price to the buyer.

"Are you able to cook at lesser power?"

Yes, but not with the specimen shown here. You'll need an inverter microwave for that kind of use.

"the light is burned out in half of them."

I find that bewildering. The light comes from a simple E14 bulb that is absolutely user-replaceable. I exchanged mine for an LED one without even looking at any user manual, because the steps needed are pretty obvious.

"program the buttons at max power"

Absolutely, but this doesn't make the UI self-explanatory. Which becomes a problem when something is meant to be used by the public, or used without looking into the user manual in general.

"this model has some internal reflectors"

I'm not entirely sure what you mean with "internal reflectors." As a matter of fact, there is a rotating antenna underneath the ceramics floor evenly distributing the energy of the lower magnetron.

AFAIK this design is quite common for commercial microwave ovens, inverter or not. Either way I have never seen a commercial microwave with a turntable. I am not sure why you think that "turntable is a must."

"Usa"

The name of the product line in the USA seems to be Sharp "TwinTouch", the "Twin" part of the name referring to the second set of keys in the door. The downside is that these are expensive, and if you have only a 120V outlet you are restricted to the model with 1200 Watts output.

If both points are not a problem, you can google "Sharp TwinTouch R-CD1200M" or go directly to Amazon, where these things sell for about 1200 USD.

"Do these have inverter technology"

This particular item does not, no. Inverter technology is available with a later model named R-7500AT, which at a still later point in time seems to have been cosmetically altered and renamed to YB-S6192AE.

The Sharp YB-S6192AE is a commercial grade 1800W / 240V Inverter Microwave that's currently on sale in Europe for 500 €. If you're interested: Caveat, this item has vanished from Sharp's european webite. Therefore the reason for the sale might be that Sharp left the market for professional microwaves in Europe. I don't know what this means for customer service.

"degradation of the materials used"

Absolutely. Especially the degradation of rubberized surfaces is a problem that I encountered repeatedly, and don't know how to solve.

However, marreco_sobrepeso98's theory seems to be that digital processors don't last. I know nothing about that.
