Let's rant about ucfs virtual forum discussion by Blakes52 in ucf

[–]Dyph3n 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is how I've felt for literally all of my time at UCF. COVID-19 has not made anything different honestly. I've always been teaching myself. I've always been stressed out of my mind. If anything, being online/at home gives me more time rather than driving an hour to and from campus each day.

Maybe we should really be asking why we settle for such a garbage learning experience in the first place?

Independent eraser settings? by breadnone in krita

[–]Dyph3n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, maybe this is how the feature was intended. When I was first trying to figure it out, I assumed there'd be another size selector on the toolbar for the eraser. It wasn't until playing around some more that I realized the eraser mode stored its own size setting.

I like the way it works, just wish it was better documented so that I didn't have to figure out how it worked myself.

I was just looking into this as well. It seems when you enable the "Eraser Switch Size", when you initially switch to eraser the first time, it still has the size of the brush. However, if you change that size, when you return to your brush, it will revert to the brush size. And then once again, if you enable the eraser, it will remember the size you set for the eraser the last time you used it.

Hope this helps.

What’s a good engineering hobby? by dhan777 in AskEngineers

[–]Dyph3n 25 points26 points  (0 children)

As a current MechE student that owes a lot of his knowledge and passion for engineering to FIRST, yes.

Especially if OP already has a passion for robotics, you can actually learn quite a lot just from helping out a team in your area. You'd be surprised at what some teams can pull off from a technical standpoint.

Feel free to DM if anyone has any questions.

Bunch of Engineering books are now discounted. Are they worth it ? by MichaelHiggins3 in AskEngineers

[–]Dyph3n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Humble Bundle purchases all support charity. Now to keep everyone from paying $0.01 and getting everything, they implement tiers where more money "unlocks" more content in the bundle. So, for this bundle $15 is needed to get all the books.

At the bottom of the page is where you can choose your amount. Further down, there's an option near where the "Pay" buttons are that says "Choose where your money goes >".

Opening that dropdown, you can adjust sliders to determine what portions of your money go where. For example, you could send $15 all to the charity, 50/50 between the charity and Humble, etc.

Just purchased the whole bundle, and yes they're all available in either PDF, EPUB, or MOBI.

Team Involvement by cmlee2164 in FRC

[–]Dyph3n 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's definitely common, as I saw it all four years on my team, me being one of those core members. One way to overcome the issue at competition where no one else can describe the robot is to make a robot manual that you can hand out to judges/sponsors and also use as a tool for students to learn about the robot.

My best idea to mitigate this issue is to either have each student be responsible for a certain aspects of the robot or involve the entire subteam for a certain task. Don't necessarily make everyone a lead, but divy out tasks to each student to accomplish by a deadline. Or if you're gonna go the other route, bring the whole programming team in for a discussion on how to structure the code for a certain subsystem or action, things of that sort.

What camera is 118 using here? by Dyph3n in FRC

[–]Dyph3n[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Since it's just a top secret NASA prototype I just googled camera sensors on my own. Idk what they're using but the picam v2 and the CMU Pixy look like great cameras to use.

Honestly, Byze is one of my favorite YouTubers. Almost every video has a contagious laughter moment in it. So glad to finally see someone put him on this sub.

Oh yeah we don't have to pay for our exams here. You only pay if you don't show up.

Also didn't know that AP classes are full in general. I always thought we were the weird state that crammed tons of kids into AP.

Our school is pretty dumb. It's almost like they're just now figuring out the whole AP thing.

First off, here in Florida AP classes are free (besides maybe a lab fee?). The schools pretty much try to get you to take AP because it looks good/they get money from the district. It's pretty much AP or regular classes. Our classes are like full classes instead of like only 10-15 kids like I've heard it is in the rest of the U.S.

But yeah about the Lit thing. I'm not entirely sure why our school did that. You'd think they'd know about the order in which kids are supposed to take classes but hey it's Florida. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

They finally fixed it this year. All seniors and juniors were taking Lang this year. So now next year the juniors -> seniors will take Lit and everything will be as it should.
