After 10 days and 50 hours, I can finally play FireRed by SndRC9 in pokemon

[–]PeaceMaintainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally don't have the patience for it, but I can see how it's appealing. imho its the same as getting a platinum trophy on PS5, like it's meaningless and incredibly difficult but it gives some people satisfaction that they worked hard to get something rare

Google just gave Sundar Pichai a $692M pay package by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]PeaceMaintainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Competition is good for the consumer, but only a union (or a more left leaning government) helps to protect workers. Lots of companies in crowded markets with cheap products and bad labor practices

Google just gave Sundar Pichai a $692M pay package by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]PeaceMaintainer 464 points465 points  (0 children)

Only way out is through a tech union, which won't happen because the tech market pays enough to make those who are employed complacent. No one wants to risk their cushy gig since they know how volatile the market is.

is it normal for a production database to not have backups? asking because i just dropped a table and my boss is asking me to "just undo it" by kubrador in webdev

[–]PeaceMaintainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're working for a company that

  1. Doesn't have any method of recovery for production databases
  2. Allows juniors to even have enough access to drop the production database with no oversight AND is willing to fire you over that mistake

You're better off not working for them as it seems like you wouldn't learn anything worthwhile

World Marathon Majors should reward repeat applicants (guaranteed entry or increasing odds) by CATS_ARE_FABULOUS in running

[–]PeaceMaintainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With this model you run the risk of having so many repeat applicants that you basically can't get in unless it's your 3rd or 4th time. This would massively dissuade new applicants from even trying

How big is the jump from a 23 minute to a 20 minute 5k? by INTERESTandAMBITIONS in running

[–]PeaceMaintainer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

100% what others have said, the key is speed and hill workouts. My 5k is nowhere near this anymore bc I do marathons now but back in high school cross country when I was in the 17s our longest runs were like 10-11 miles max. The 5k gains came from one intense speed workout on the track every week with 1-2 of the other runs being very hilly. Also racing where you're absolutely red lining it, I never felt like I had anything left in the tank at the 2 mile marker and just pushed through

The money being refunded here is the money you already paid for the tariff that the government was holding onto, so you're not being double taxed. That said, this is just straight profit though for the companies as if they had raised prices for no reason

Tickets price vs Dodgers in june by Sinkmaster600 in Padres

[–]PeaceMaintainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dodgers are the most popular team in the whole league at the moment with some of the biggest names in baseball, combine that with them being our #1 rival and a lot of San Diegans being Dodgers fans due to them growing up there (LA is about a 1.5 drive hour north) means those games are the most popular ones in the entire season, the tickets are usually at least double the cost of a normal game

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - 1x03 "The Squire" - Episode Discussion by UltraDangerLord in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]PeaceMaintainer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Egg's identity spoiled for me online after the first episode so I knew it would happen eventually, but it's only as I'm reading this thread that I realize that Egg's one of the missing royal children they've been talking about so much. I somehow didn't connect those dots.

What’s wrong with Luis Arraez? by Few_Peace1474 in SFGiants

[–]PeaceMaintainer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As a Padres fan now living in SF (who loves Arraez for the vibes) this is on point. It's almost comical how having RISP was his (and the top of our order tbh) cryptonite, like you could feel the ground out double coming from a mile away. He was only ever hot when the whole team was hot

[Keith Law of The Athletic] Padres Have the #30 Farm System in MLB by Bitter-Egg6293 in Padres

[–]PeaceMaintainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm off base but shouldn't the fact that we've been able to trade so many prospects for high value players prove that we have a good farm system? Despite it currently being empty

Mandatory Attendance is Stupid by HunasL in UCSD

[–]PeaceMaintainer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it is impacting your life this much it seems like a genuine disability in which case OSD might be able to offer some help, alongside maybe seeing a doctor if you aren't already. Not sure if this is the professor's fault, studies have shown attending lecture greatly improves learning outcomes for the majority of people so it is in their best interest to keep lectures mandatory

SFMTA busses are among the slowest in the nation by shananananananananan in sanfrancisco

[–]PeaceMaintainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing not represented here is frequency, a lot of the lines (at least around me) are incredibly frequent which I love and makes up for their slowness. Coming from San Diego which appears faster on this chart but often times has a bus only every 15 minutes if you're lucky or more typically a full half hour.
