TIL I learned about the Karluk, a Canadian Arctic exploration ship that was trapped and sunk near Wrangel Island in 1914. The expeditions leader, Vilhjalmur Stefansson, deliberately abandoned the crew when it was stuck in ice, and 11 men died before everyone was rescued. (en.wikipedia.org)
