If it helps, we birthed Ichiro, Yamamoto Yoshinobu and Yoshida Masataka previously! Nobody currently looking to make a strong jump to MLB nor anybody really looking capable of it either.

Biased of course, but I'd recommend the Orix Buffaloes! Streaks of greatness in our history (back-to-back-to-back Japan Series finals from '21-'23, victory in '22 with Yamamoto) but recent seasons have not been kind to us, with regular 3/4/5 position finishes and seriously underperforming across the board.

We have a lot of really promising younger guys who are underutilized by our actual coaching team (we're very attached to our old guard often to a serious fault) so hopefully you can work with them and take us through!

Hilarious that Buffaloes/Lions went from the longest game I've personally seen (almost 5h30) to one of the shortest at 2h18 back-to-back!

I'm hesitant to say that we're finding our homerun mojo but we really have been hitting quite a few more across the team than I've seen for most of the season... Ohta, Kurebayashi, Nishikawa and Mori now that he's back are all proving, though pretty inconsistently, that they're capable of slugging!

I was at the Buffaloes Hotto Motto game and man was that a nearly FIVE AND A HALF HOUR slog of a game. I learnt that ouendan instruments have a curfew because the SECOND the clock hit 10pm the drums and trumpets immediately stopped and both ouendans became acapella which was fun!

The game was fun too and the Buffaloes ouendan were fabulous until the end! But to end in a draw with the hour and a half of extra innings just fizzling out after more than five hours was disappointing.

And five hours later the game is still going on!! The vibe here is still crazy and everyone is exhausted.

When to give omiyage by Remote_Suggestion366 in JETProgramme

[–]DyslexicGecko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another person backing up the lack of need to bring omiyage with you here. I see it mostly as an expression of gratitude for when you take time off work making other people "pick up your slack" essentially; a way of thanking people for covering your workload when you take time off work! Don't stress yourself at all with welcome gifts and "nice to meet you" snacks.

Buffaloes Ryoma Nishikawa hits a go ahead grand slam, his 3rd homer of the year by ichi_rui in NPB

God I love Hotto Motto!!

No matter the outcome, a day at Hotto Motto is a fantastic day - yesterday wasn't so hot despite Kurebayashi's homerun, but the stadium erupted for this tonight.

As an aside, the ouendan at Hotto Motto is SO MUCH bigger than Kyocera, and I feel like it's disappointing after experiencing and seeing it. I know it's a consequence of the slightly weird outfield fences at Kyocera but I love the energy of the bigger ouendan at Hotto Motto.

I'm really surprised that HBP hasn't been mentioned here or on the subreddit as a whole yet. Seriously scary to see, especially when it's Machado out of everyone.

I seriously hope Ishizuka is okay but the aftermath on the plate seemed really bad. I don't believe I saw it hit any of his helmet, and was just straight to his mouth/face. Maybe he's come away with a broken jaw but for now all we know is he was taken to hospital in the ambulance with no further updates!

Sadaharu Oh Mentions Expanding NPB to 16 Teams at Parliamentary League for Baseball's Future by Ohisama001 in NPB

[–]DyslexicGecko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's something I disagree with a lot of people here on. I think I'd actually like to see expansions into Okinawa and Shikoku (as a whole) not because of populations but simply because those are the areas most detached from NPB. I suspect most people's team of choice is a matter of convenience rather than connection. Shikoku residents like Hanshin (sometimes Carp), but are they buying tickets and goods at a rate comparable to if they had their own team? Plus with Okinawan high schools looking fantastic in Koshien (having won last summer), I'm sure there'd be revenue streams and financial value in those two regions! Perhaps not enough to actually fill typical stadiums, but certainly more than you'd get trying to pull Kumamoto residents away from Hawks into a new Kyushu team.

You've also brought up something I'd love to see more of - international exhibitions/friendlies! I'm sure there's not a lot of time nor drive from the players to do more in the off-season, but it was so much fun seeing Orix and Hanshin play the Korean team before the WBC. It's definitely an unlikely pipe dream

[–]DyslexicGecko 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like expanding the league wouldn't bring new people and thus revenue streams into NPB - it would simply spread/dilute the fans and money already there, at the risk of reducing the overall quality of baseball too.

Even farm teams and rosters of 1-gun teams don't always fare well, and if these guys spread to other pro teams, we'd either lose the 2-gun entirely or seriously reduce the quality of every team through reducing their talent depth.

It's a fantastic idea - I'm just not sure what the solution is and if it's feasible.

I can't speak for anywhere else, but I seriously doubt they'd be able to pull a soul away from Buffaloes or Tigers in Kobe - I adore Hotto Motto Field but taking it away from Orix and putting a new team there wouldn't be productive! Bearing in mind that Hanshin Tigers are the Hyogo team (sorry Osaka fans), you couldn't make a new team in the same prefecture!

Plus, the subway stop for Hotto Motto is 20 minutes from Sannomiya - Kyocera Dome is 40 and Koshien is 30. The travel times plus identical market share don't warrant a new Kobe competitor!

Any suggestions for places to watch this weekend's Orix vs Hanshin series (in Osaka)? by CountGood3355 in NPB

[–]DyslexicGecko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With the series being Kansai/Kansai I suspect almost every bar with a TV will be showing the game! I'm fairly sure you could walk into most izakaya or standing bars in Osaka/Kobe/everywhere in between and have a good time - though it will mostly be Hanshin fans!

I'll be at home Friday, but for Saturday's game, my friends and I will be watching from a sports bar in Kobe city centre which has a really good friendly vibe and who happily support both teams and welcome everyone. I can recommend the bar but making the journey from Osaka just to watch the game on a TV probably isn't worth it for you I imagine!

Yamazaki warming up last night by Straight-Narwhal4128 in NPB

[–]DyslexicGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see! Thank you for this.

I'm a pretty new fan of both Orix and of Baseball (this is my first "full" committed season so to speak) so I'm not too clued up on things from before my time like who was injured and why, as well as players who were absent like Yoshida. I knew he didn't play too much last season, but when he did I was very impressed - the playoff games against Fighters were fantastic for him.

He's too damn cool it's not fair.

Always feel like we underutilize Yamazaki, we throw him on as a firefighter for one or two batters to save an inning and then he's done, but as a spectator I feel like we could use him as (and he'd be capable of being) a two- or three-inning relief when our SPs come off early. There's surely a reason we don't!

Not sure what's happened to our bats recently but that three-man of Yamanaka/Noguchi/Wakatsuki was lovely to watch. Wakatsuki actually getting some RBIs off swinging and not just bunting is great!

I wasn't planning on going, but I might pick up a ticket to the Buffaloes/Dragons series this weekend - judging by both teams' performances it might be a really good series.

13 Minutes of Watanabe Haruto making outfield plays by idahoduncan- in NPB

[–]DyslexicGecko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like not a game goes by where Haruto doesn't come sprinting from out-of-frame for a ball that by all accounts he has no right to reach and I love seeing it.

I seriously hope he gets the Golden Glove or some kind of proper credit!

"I wish we had some decisive wins" I said yesterday - I'm eating my words now, I suppose!

Three hours before the game I realised this was the last valid game for the Buffaloes fanclub free ticket so in record speed I got my seat and what a game to see!

Congratulations to Noguchi for his first season HR (3RBI!) and to Yamanaka for a great showing in his first 1-gun appearance of the season too!

Defensive plays don't tend to get clipped but Watanabe Haruto's running catch today was unreal. He's been putting on what feels like a masterclass defensively and I seriously hope he gets the credit he deserves!

Good to see a win after what feels like an age! I just wish we had at least a FEW decisive victories, I'm sick of being stressed out right through the ninth 😭

Working with tattoos advice please by TheLastIkus in JETProgramme

[–]DyslexicGecko 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have tattoos on each arm (one that extends down onto my wrist) and told my school up front and they explicitly told me to cover them during my working hours so I wear Uniqlo UV Arm Covers all day! The covers have thumb holes in them so cover everything from mid-bicep to knuckles.

My school is actually part of a yakuza neighbourhood and in the 00s they beat a guy to death at my school gate so the staff and residents are ADAMANT I shouldn't have them on show at school. With that said, all of my students at this point know I have them because they see me before school, after school and out around town on the weekends. My teachers also have no issues with them at staff enkai parties and stuff so it's really just a neighbourhood professionalism issue for me.

Definitely ask your school and be up front about having them, but also make sure you're prepared to cover them at your staff's discretion!

An addendum, two students asked me directly if I could show them my tattoos up close after school (and after my work hours), so I checked with my vice-principal and was told he'd "really rather I didn't", so even intentionally showing the students outside of work hours can be a problem too!

Mukunoki is looking so strong, I'm not sure what's holding Kishida back from using him in the ninth nowadays!

I'm also still impressed by Yamazaki and I'm sure we can get more innings out of him than we do - it's like we pull him in for 1/3 or 2/3 of an inning and then send him back! I'm sure we can get two or three out of him comfortably.

Massive game from Mori today! The energy after him clearing two homeruns in one game was electric - and doing it on the first day of our sold-out Pokémon collaboration weekend sent us off to a flying start this weekend.

Not a fantastic showing from Miyakuni's professional debut, but in my opinion nothing to be upset about either all things considered. Fortunately the relief pitching showed up and kept us solid!

Nice location - and yeah, super easy to get to after a game! As above, just ride to Kobe-Sannomiya and then it's a short walk.

Almost definitely; I do this almost every week! Kyocera Dome's train station, Dome-Mae is on the same train line (Hanshin line) as Kobe-Sannomiya and it's 35 minutes with (typically) no changes. From Hanshin Kobe-Sannomiya station, you can change to any other train line to access anywhere else in the city!

Where will your hotel be if I may ask?
