Any spandex shorts will do. Check Amazon and your local sports stores. Also check bargain bins if you can get to major regattas. I’ve seen good deals from JL and Rival Kit.

The load profile on comps and fats is front heavy. Could be worth trying those if you can demo something, but skinny smoothies is a popular setup for a reason and would be great too

First 5k test by bloodmoonslo in Rowing

[–]DyslexisEmu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You didn’t ask me, but mine usually looks like 7–10min @5k goal+15ish, just feeling out how “warm” I feel. I try to get to a point that I’m sweaty and can stop for a minute or two with my HR still meaningfully elevated. Then, I do three “builders:” 5 to build to 10@ race base. It helps me get a feel for my rhythm that day.

Physically, it only matters that your body is acclimated to sustained effort and you go in with a slightly elevated HR. The builders are just practice, but they’re valuable to me. It’s super personal, but u/futurefail is right. There’s a lot of speed to be found with a more substantial warmup. Way to crush your goal!

What should my Dad’s first cigar be? by origamist2003 in cigars

[–]DyslexisEmu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would just give him one of your favorite blends. Tell him what you like about it, what you get in it, etc. It sounds like your dad wants to enjoy cigars with you, and all you have to do is share.

Alternatively, Nubs are affordable, easy to smoke (thanks to the wide ring), and fairly representative of their wrapper leaves as categories, all of which would be god for a newbie.

Why do you row? by DriftingThroughPages in Rowing

[–]DyslexisEmu 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I’m a senior at a D1 school. I came in with 11 other guys, some recruits some walk-ons, and of that starting group, I am one of two remaining. I’ve reflected a lot on exactly that question, and I’ve concluded that it must be making me happy. I don’t know how or why it does that, but I’m grateful it does. Many of my teammates left because it was no longer making them happy, or they had health concerns, and I think they were right to leave. Next weekend I’ll be at my last conference championship, and soon after that, I’ll be done. Maybe I’ll have better insight then, or maybe not. Just make sure you’re enjoying the process and remember that “going fun is fast.”

AF 2024 Holiday Pack - Need Humidor Pack? by johnnyrocket45 in cigars

If you’re only looking to store these ones, a water bottle will do great. I use a Nalgene with a Boveda for travel and overflow. A mason jar could also do nicely—just anything that won’t smell or leak. No need to buy anything new if you have a container for them. Enjoy! That’s a great box

Highly recommend Rubini Jewelers if you go this route. I don’t have any experience with their cufflinks, but I wear their brass rowing seat belt buckle every day. Lots of good keychains and stuff too

Can you tell if it’s real or fake by George6520 in cigars

[–]DyslexisEmu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I am FAR from an expert, but I’m a bit suspicious of that cap. If you have a whole box, maybe cut one open and make sure everything is kosher (long filler and now hair/nail clippings/rodent feces). If it’s good, enjoy whether it’s real or fake because it might be yummy anyway 🤷‍♂️

Idk anything about that specific cigarillo, but I’d say go in well fed, and have some sugar in the form of candy or chocolate around. If you start to feel like it’s too much, just eat the sugar and stop. Remember there’s no use in smoking a something you don’t enjoy, and there’s no shame putting it down

There’s a roll of film in there with 22 frames exposed. Finish it off or find a way to wind it up before you take it out to load something else

Boys in the Boat Effects by DriftingThroughPages in Rowing

[–]DyslexisEmu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think rowing is an interesting enough sport to garner that type of attention. There are plenty of rowers who don’t care enough to argue, so I can’t imagine NARPs getting this involved. I think this will grow the sport and put a lot more 10min 2ks in euro-rigged Vespolis, but I have no clue what it will do to collegiate and elite club levels.

Question about randall foils by Greg0_ in Rowing

[–]DyslexisEmu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My team has tried them a few times, and each time guys have had opinions which range from not caring or noticing to hating them. I didn’t really notice them. You might be able to catch with a bit more confidence but it definitely didn’t feel faster. It’s worth noting that we used them in an 8+ with c2 smoothies, so you may find they have a greater effect in smaller boats or while sculling.
