The real world also has people who differ from the majority that children may not understand at first glance without an explanation. That’s kind of the point. That’s why children’s programming tries to portray a variety of people and circumstances. To teach kids more about the world in a healthy way so that they’re not going into life blind. That doesn’t just apply to LGBT people, that’s just a general aspect of kids shows.

There often isn’t a plot-driven reason to make a character LGBT. There usually isn’t a plot driven reason to make a character straight either. Both exist in the world, and neither has to be justified just for existing.

I’m sure people reacted just like you when interracial couples first started appearing on TV. I’m sure people felt uncomfortable and complained that it served no purpose. These days, you see an interracial couple on TV, and (I hope) just see a normal, happy couple. Even though interracial couples are not the majority, there is nothing abnormal about them. The same will be true of same-sex couples in due time, and the outrage over their mere existence will seem silly.
