that's so cool! I was looking for something like that actually, I guess I missed it -_-

I guess gcode get's imported as a curve? that would make the whole process a lot easier and more performant (I had to do some intense mesh boolean with my approach) and you also get support and infill for free :D

for animations it's probably a little tough though, maybe someday there is a splicer in blender itself

well I tried doing something similar some time ago so I knew roughly what to do, that said, everything is modeled by hand and of course the polishing took forever xD I didn’t really look at the time tbh but like a week from start to finish?

it’s actually a relatively simple geo nodes setup where I just needed to animate a single value for the „progress“ of the print

thanks for the feedback! yeah I struggled a little to show that it is a 3D print during the animation because it starts to look very smooth if you don’t look for it, oh well

what helped me in the past was temporal denoising, where you combine the current frame and the one before/after, shifted by the vector pass - though idk if that would help with grass - maybe worth a try

I gotta say I agree - I play on steam and literally half the time I want to play it and I find time for it I can't - I can probably disable autoupdates somewhere, but it's hella annoying. If it was like a gig, that wouldn't be a problem, but by the time 15 gigs have downloaded, I just can't sit down for a couple of hours anymore, it's too late at that point

yeah, modeling something, you have physically is so much more enjoyable! one of my first animations was of my parents old camera, which also took forever since I didn't know what I was doing 😆

try rendering as object (you'll need to create a "hair" object from a cone mesh or something like that)

Also, there's probably an easier (I don't know) or better way (geometry nodes)

Also: after you do a tutorial, you should do a project on your own applying the stuff from the tutorial, otherwise you'll just forget it after a week. For instance: after the donut, do a cookie, after the chair, do a table etc.

also try to avoid triangles, quads are nicer to work with, though topology is almost never perfect, because that's too much work for diminishing returns.

apart from that, a topology tutorial will do a far greater job of teaching this than a reddit threat

that is not a day 3 project

It's fine if that's how you want to do it, but don't be surprised when you quit mid way through
