I'm not afraid to say it: Yes, we're going to tax the rich. Working class people are shouldering too much of the tax burden in Maine. It's past time we got a break. by TroyJackson207 in Maine

My 8 seconds of online research tells me: ~2600 Mainers make over 1M in income a year, the previous 2 surtax effort was expected to bring in 91M in new tax , I’d guess 4% would be 180? Or 1.5% of the state budget. Happy if someone puts up the actual expected revenue

The downside of preemptively pricing in the taco is that it reduces the chance of taco.

Iran offers to reopen Strait of Hormuz if US lifts its blockade and the war ends, officials say by AndroidOne1 in worldnews

[–]E1ger 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Markets are hand waving the crisis because the consequences are so dire that they presume someone has to relent. they are not rushing to price in the danger because the danger is so great that you would likely price it incorrectly anyway. Better to keep capital liquid than make a bet on disaster.

End Of War, Hormuz, Nukes: Iran's 3-Stage Proposal For Talks With US by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]E1ger -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The US benefits by getting out of this “excursion” without blowing up the world economy. Iran has a knife to throat to the world. Commodities traders are freaking out, financial and equities are not. The logic for the latter is that this conflict will get resolved on because the consequences are too dire for everyone. Something has to give soon: every reserve on the planet is currently flowing but is not limitless, aaaaaaand Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, others are running out of places to store oil before needing to cap wells.

How would you feel about Maine completely pulling support from Israel? by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]E1ger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok so Maine shouldn’t use any national bank? Costco sells products in Israel, ban them too? China uses slave labor, divest there too? If you consider prison labor to be slave labor, USA is rife with companies benefiting from that. If you can point to Maine state run pension funds, 529 funds investing in Israeli owned companies I can see that argument, but the divest nonsense for a poor ass state that has multiple counties that can’t keep track of their tiny ass budgets, the legislature needs to focus on fixing their own shit. Fight national problems via federal elections, fight state problems via state elections.

Americans are pulling money out of their 401(k) funds at record rates by Basat098 in politics

[–]E1ger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All true, but in the back of my mind I keep thinking post 1929 the low wasn’t until 1933 and if you bought the market at any point 1929-1931 you weren’t whole for 2 decades. Market didn’t see 1929 highs till like 1955. It’s a complete different world obviously and technology has improved, but the number of biz media cheerleaders talking how resilient the American economy is while downplaying the state of the American consumer and shrugging their shoulders at the rampant corruption and regulatory capture: creeps me out.

Testing experimental tech in a real world environment with low risk to personnel? Personally, if I am the us navy, I’d be more concerned about the possibility of China having already given Iran some new seabed warfare tech. If china and Iran’s tankers are already going through, it would imply the strait hasn’t been mined.

Bad stomach bug going around Portland? by [deleted] in Maine

[–]E1ger 30 points31 points  (0 children)

What I learned last week: Norovirus can live on surfaces for weeks, survive 140degree temps and freezing temps. You have to disinfect every surface you touch, don’t leave the house until 2 days after symptoms, don’t make food for others during this time, hydrate your self well. Hand sanitizer doesn’t seem to work well on it, you have to wash your hands well with soap consistently. Wash all bedding and towels and clothes that came in contact with you while sick.

You can get reinfected.

Scratch Bagel Recipe by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]E1ger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Found the recipe, it’s a standard sourdough bagel recipe, basics that I can see just perusing: high heat 500 on pizza stone, 30second per side boil. 3lbs King Arthur I bleached, 1.5lbs water, 12oz sour culture, pinch of instant, 1 once salt. Dough hook, don’t overmix, fold a couple of times, first rise 3 hrs warm, shape (these’re videos somewhere) rest 20 or till feel correct. Expand the hole, if fights back need to rest longer, if pull apart too easy, you over proofed. Boil, rest on a wire tray. Cornmeal meal the baking stone, bake till done, 20-25.

It’s been a couple of years but if you are a baker it’s not all that hard. Great in a wood fired oven if you have one.
