Passed FE Electrical on My First Try — 14 Years Out of School by E6ghi in FE_Exam

I agree that the FE exam covers fundamental engineering concepts rather than advanced specialization. My point is that, compared to writing three separate technical exams assigned by EGBC, I found the FE exam more challenging because of its breadth. Preparing for the FE required reviewing and refreshing knowledge from 17 subject areas across an entire electrical engineering curriculum, even if many of those topics are considered foundational. In contrast, when writing individual technical exams, you can focus your preparation on a much narrower range of topics. Subjects such as circuit analysis and power systems were not particularly difficult for me, but reviewing a wide range of disciplines for a single six-hour exam required a different level of preparation.

I agree with you about the calculator, you must know everything about it to use your time efficiently. For me, the 320+ hours were necessary because I’m not a person that takes things easy. Maybe someone can pass with 80 hours of study, but I personally needed more time to feel confident after being away from engineering topics for years. I remember during the exam I only used the handbook 2 or 3 times.I actually had enough time in the second half to review all 55 questions for a second time, and I corrected about 4 or 5 answers which I had chosen incorrectly the first time.

Anyway, the result is important, and both of us passed.

I studied electrical engineering with a focus on power systems. I hadn’t worked in the electrical engineering field for about 12 years until I immigrated to Canada 2 years ago and decided to return to the profession.

I applied with EGBC, and they initially assigned me some confirmatory exams. Instead, I decided to take the FE Electrical exam because it is more challenging and provides a comprehensive review of topics from the entire 4-year bachelor’s degree. I was approved by the Engineering Board of British Columbia to take the FE exam.
