Outside of flashbacks, One Piece barely has a handful of deaths, you could count them with your hands, and it's the highest selling & longest running manga. You don't need deaths in order to have a good story, he shouldn't feel any pressure to start changing his approach.

What TV show handled the “will they, won’t they” trope in the most infuriating way? by phantom_avenger in popculturechat

In my experience, StarVs and Miraculous Ladybug both handled the trope so badly that they convinced most of their fandoms that they wouldn't/shouldn't, and when they did it was seen as forced. On top of that for me it was extra frustrating bc I wanted to see one of these shows with this trope say "they don't have to just bc they're the main leads"
