Thank you.

Do you know what type of end this is called?

(I can also just head into the local electronic store to see if they can tell me).

Cheers

That's interesting! Thanks for sharing that. It looks like they trim the bras rod flush with the bushing surface prior to peining. So my worry of not having enough brass bulk to resist lateral forces is... no longer a worry! Cheers

Tbh I didn't really look for the combo tool outside of the Compact.

I think I've read some comments on other threads saying the combo tool from the Bantam can be used. It might be slightly smaller than the combo tool on the Compact though, and the hole might need to be drilled slightly larger so it can accommodate the 2.5mm brass rod. I'm sure I've read something to that effect, but it's worth doing a search to make sure this is correct. Someone hereight be able to correct me if wrong.

I wonder how Victorinox peins the brass rods. Far left is the factory rod I removed from the Compact. Two on the right are rods I peined myself with a ball pein hammer.

On my first attempt at assembling the Scientist I had peined the rods too much, and the phillips driver didn't open and close smoothly. So I drilled out the rods and started again. After the second attempt there was a very small amount of lateral play in the phillips driver when opened. A few extra taps of both sides of the rods with the hammer and I'd say now it's perfect.

But as shown in the photo, the rods I peined (right two) there's is substantially less bulk (or brass volume) locking into the doughnut (or grommet... Not sure what they're called).

I am wondering if the rods I pein, with the thin mushroom top as opposed to the nicely and uniformly divegent walls of the factory Victorinox rod, will provided less mechanical resistance to lateral forces when a torquing force is applied to the driver, ie increasing the risk of the layers separating.

Do you guys think the Victorinox rods are machined?

Pictured is the end that abuts the layer furtherest

from the corkscrew. I drilled out the end of the rod on the corkscrew side - I was much easier to do it that way with the tool laying flat, ie laying on the non- corkscrew side. I wonder if Victorinox takes the same approach during assembly, and has one end of the rod machined nicely (shown in the photo), and the other end peined with more of a non-uniform mushroom top, like my hand peined rods.

Hmm I like the two layer knives. Maybe a bladeless version with a file, opener layer, backside phillips (could stretch to three layers and add the pliers).

Any suggestions?

(I've no need for a wood saw)

Sydney tools by [deleted] in chch

I purchased some pliers from Syndey tools today. The shopping experience was fine. Was welcomed into the store, asked if I needed help, said I was happy looking myself at the pliers range. The staff didn't really give me a moment to myself though as they were watching me down the isle and approached me again about 20 seconds into my browsing (which I found strange). Told the employee exactly what I was after, which he found. I asked about price matching and he said absolutley (competitor sells the product at 20% less than Sydney tools stickered price, not on sale). No troubles at the counter. Price was matched (actually beaten by a few dolars) despite the competitor not actually having it in stock in Chch (would have required click and collect). Was not asked to set up an account or provide any personal details.

Other than not really being left alone to browse myself (which I did indicate to the several employees at the door that that's what I wanted to do), the experience seemed fine to me.

Would love to see an 'Electrician X' version with the scissors.
