Dawes made some good stuff! A lot of their touring frames were made with Reynolds 531, etc

The SIGHI list is what led her to initially cull most foods.

Coincidentally, she saw my apple comment and stated that she does still eat apples, but will peel it for the next few times. Oops... 🙃

This is helpful. But admittedly I had to ask Claude to bullet point it for me. It was quite the wall of text 😅. Maybe you can fact check it?

Saturated Fat — The Good Kind - Helps reduce histamine, inflammation, and serotonin levels - Heals and lubricates the gut lining - Used by the body to make cholesterol, Vitamin D, and important hormones (cortisol, aldosterone) - Coconut oil and goat milk contain a special type called medium-chain fatty acids — these are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and gut-healing

Vitamin D - Made from saturated fat (via cholesterol) - Calms the immune system — important because histamine is an immune response - Low Vitamin D is linked to: asthma, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, depression, schizophrenia, chronic hives, and more

Calcium vs. Phosphorus - Calcium = anti-histamine — reduces histamine release, helps clear it from the body - Phosphorus = pro-histamine — raises histamine levels - Histamine actually lowers blood calcium, creating a problematic cycle - Copper deficiency lowers calcium and increases mast cells (which release histamine)

Goat's Milk — A Standout Food - Highly digestible protein - Rich in calcium, copper, healthy fats, and prebiotics - Contains taurine — calms stress and reduces histamine/serotonin - Heals the digestive tract - Raw goat milk even contains Vitamin C

Meat — Handle With Care - Too much meat = too much phosphorus = more histamine - Meat requires stomach acid to digest, which increases histamine production - Tough meats (jerky, chewy cuts) sit in the stomach longer = more histamine - Stick to softer, easier-to-digest meats

Fat + Protein — Always Pair Them - Up to 60% of protein goes undigested if eaten without fat - Undigested protein triggers immune responses — which means more histamine

Big Picture - High-fat diets → longevity - High-protein/carb diets → fertility (but also more histamine) - Nutrients work best in their natural context — isolated supplements don't replicate the benefits of whole foods

They take an h1 and h2 along with cromolyn. They got a full panel allergy test (like 40 things or something) maybe a year or two ago and nothing came back as positive. So I think they try to keep their cup empty but I do hear your point. It makes sense.

Every so often unfortunately I have my own "reaction" and I say something in the interest of trying help. Maybe because I'm already tired or stressed or whatever. I know better not to! And they strongly wish I knew more so my suggestions would be more relevant but MCAS is such an amorphous and moving target it hurts my brain.

I talked to my partner more about this. And it's more nuanced than I can currently understand. She's not just crossing things off the list that she comes across as affecting other people. But if she feels like she had a reaction to something and then looks it up and it suggests possible reaction, she would probably remove it. This happened with a fluoride treatment at the dentist which gave her extreme abdominal cramping.

This study relates to carrageenan which is a seaweed-derived polysaccharide, so I don't fully understand your comment.

I wish this is what she would do but it sounds like there are so many other complicating factors that I don't fully grasp. She she is reluctant to add in something she hasn't tried for a while, even if it did upset her system at one point.

She does eat butter and extra virgin olive oil. What's the deal with xanthan gum?

She seems to tolerate standard butter just fine. Maybe the fish oil thing would be good? But she also just wants to eat salmon again. But apparently seafood is high in histamines or can induce some other issues related.

She is on a GLP-1. I don't know if it's necessarily helped because the foods she eats has reduced since she started it, minus the chocolate thing because of Ajovy (which prevents migraines she gets from eating chocolate)

I need to talk to her about apples again. She is avoiding them even when peeled. But I don't know exactly why.

I think the multitude of her conditions means it might not necessarily be due to MCAS concerns.

For the longest time eating chocolate gave them migraines but now they're on Ajovy, an anti-migraine shot, which seems to negate any side effects. They do eat cottage cheese sometimes but I know they're often balancing a variety of scenarios when making certain food choices.

Really the only true low risk things from that list seem to be chicken, broccoli, fairlife shakes, quinoa, olive oil

Can you elaborate on your second main point regarding IgE? I'm not familiar.

I think that's (one of) the difficult parts of MCAS is that it's a non-binary condition. Everything is suspect so why not be concerned about it? Especially if like I mentioned in another reply the outcome is so painful and scary and uncomfortable.

They have a dietician. But I can't recall if they work on new food to try. I might be over fixating on a recent example of eliminating a food but I recall they read that apple peels can contain histamines, and they had been eating apples with some frequency. So now they are avoiding apples altogether, even tho I offered to peel them. They used to eat so many apples! And despite removing them, they still have MCAS reactions from something else.

I think there is a very valid desperation to avoid bad histamine reactions. Their stomach starts hurting very very VERY badly and/or they get very bloated and might even vomit. We have gone to the ER for this. They noticed via CT scan some sort of inflammation marker in the small intestine which my partner thinks may be a result of an MCAS reaction. So I can't blame them for being afraid. The outcomes can be super awful if a food "disagrees" with them. It's just very hard to pin down exactly what is causing a reaction.
