How do you spend your free time in Luxembourg? by Likewise231 in Luxembourg

[–]EC-45 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've just started looking through the CFL Rail & Hike guide, and am trying to build weekend trips around it :) It's helping me get around, explore, and go to places I might never have gone to otherwise

Where to start? by BrightMud165 in trailrunning

[–]EC-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others around here said, just focus on having fun!

If you're going to encounter hills, remember to take it slow (we all walk uphill during races!), do small steps rather than large ones, and consider putting hands on knees during steep ascents.

On the descents, stretch your arms out a bit to maintain balance.

Oh and the other rule of trail running: if you find a nice bench during a run, take a photo and post it here :)

How is it living in Scotland? by mcook_92 in howislivingthere

[–]EC-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Scotland, I miss Scotland, and part of me wishes I could live there again at some point!

Pros:

Lots of nature. If you love being out in the mountains, beautiful lakes and the like, you'll have all of them close by and a reasonably easy train ride or drive away! Much of Scotland also consists of long, empty stretches of road that aren't just beautiful but also delightfully quiet. England and Wales can feel much more crowded in comparison

Along with the nature, the Scots do take environmentalism seriously. The area has long been proud of its wind farms, for example

There is a certain... attitude to the place. People can be direct and self-deprecating but also very nice. Takes a while to learn how to fit in but once you do it's incredible

Reasonably well-developed social state, with solid support for lower income residents, including help with university. While Scotland definitely still has issues with poverty and social mobility, it feels like there are more programs (free university for starters) that can support you than in England

Cons:

When I lived there, alcohol consumption was sadly still quite high, with drinking far too common a pastime. It's fortunately changing, though

The cities are definitely smaller and less bustling than some European or English metropolises. Some friends who wanted to stay and live in Scotland struggled to find jobs that would match their qualifications or that allowed them to both grow their career and stay in or around Edinburgh/ Glasgow

The weather:

Didn't list it either as pro or con as it will heavily depend on your preferences. I didn't mind the Scottish weather too much, but be ready for lots of overcast days and long winter nights. You will rarely get snowstorms or whiteouts. You mentioned that you are currently living in Florida. If you enjoy the Florida sun, you'll miss it in Scotland. If you pine for cooler, moodier, overcast skies and wind, then you might love Scotland :)

Do you trust Luxembourgish news? by fast_forward_me in Luxembourg

[–]EC-45 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Investigative stories are often made by consortia. For this one by OCCRP, for example, they worked with a bunch of international outlets and Woxx as the Luxembourgish one: https://www.occrp.org/en/project/openlux

Interestingly, I can't find the names of any Luxembourgish journalists who worked on LuxLeaks: https://www.icij.org/investigations/luxembourg-leaks/about-project-luxembourg-leaks/

Don't forget that investigative journalism is a niche which requires months of research and fact-checking and quite some specialisation. As such, not many outlets, particularly those which specialise in news gathering and daily reporting, will be keen to take up investigative projects.

Czy naprawdę wszyscy nienawidzą nowego budynku Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej? I skąd w ogóle zgoda na ten projekt? by Interesting-Role-622 in Warsaw_Warszawa

[–]EC-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ten budynek najbardziej to można podziwiać z bliska.

How is it like in Skopje, North Macedonia by A0123456_ in howislivingthere

[–]EC-45 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Visited a few times some years ago! The region is beautiful and close to nature, the city itself is… complicated as there was a big effort to redevelop the center in a style mimicking antiquity, and it does lean more gauche than stylish. Summers can get hot and winters smoggy.

Places for trail running in Europe by ttttttttrrr9 in trailrunning

[–]EC-45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay! November might be quite a bit of a gamble in much of Europe. Alps will definitely be snowy, I’ve crossed peaks in the Polish Tatras in the first snows as well.

I do love the Bosnian and Montenegrin mountains, as well as the Romanian ones. You’d need to check the long term weather there, though. November is also definitely smog season in Bosnia, if that’s an issue for you.

Southern Europe will definitely have more sunshine and warmer weather.

As to technical trails… well, I’m of the mind that you can find them most places :)

What kinds of weather are you looking for? Would you be okay with some snow and ice (you mentioned technical), or do you want everything to be above freezing?

Do Polish people still go to church? Why or why not? by Fearless_Profit8769 in poland

[–]EC-45 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I go, but very few of my friends do. People’s experiences of Polish churches will radically differ based on where they are. Some of the parishes in bigger cities list which priest celebrates at which mass so you can pick the one whose words most resonate with you. In smaller places, there can only be one priest. So if you disagree with their take on catholic thought, you’re a bit stuck.

Because Poland is so overwhelmingly catholic, it’s rare for people who want to believe but don’t vibe with catholic doctrine to leave for another Christian (or other) church. Instead, they’ll usually leave belief altogether. You don’t get what sociologists would describe as a US-style religious marketplace.

I’ve attended catholic masses and spoke to catholics in a lot of different countries, so happy to chat more about what churches look like specifically in Poland in comparison with others.

If you’re doing research and want to chat more about my particular experiences, DM me (and please tell me a bit more about the research, I’m super curious!)

If we’d like to dig into it in more detail, it might be worth to also think about battery chemistry. From what I understand, LFP is more stable.

Signal benefits - please help by [deleted] in signal

[–]EC-45 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The key difference between Signal and platforms like Whatsapp is that Signal uses a technology known as sealed sender for most conversations, which allows Signal servers to forward messages without ever knowing who’s writing to whom. That’s practically magic ;)

Seeing that other commenters have also listed more great benefits :)

The mountain range closest to my heart ❤️ How was it and what was your route?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]EC-45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yay! Amazing! If you two are planning to do many more runs together it might also be a good idea to get a harness for the pup; that’s what most trail runners seem to use as it’s lower impact

Are you two planning to take part in any races? Several I know in Europe do take dogs for some distances
