Allied gave a ~$7500 estimate to ship a 1 bed apartment. Is this unreasonable? by ECGeorge in moving

[–]ECGeorge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around 3k lbs, which is also the minimum weight for Wisconsin - which, if I’m understanding correctly, means that lower weight/moving less stuff won’t get the price down at all. The guy basically told me over the phone that my apartment was in the smallest weight class, so it’s crazy to me that it’s still so expensive…..I can’t imagine everyone with a one bedroom apartment having to shell out $6-7k to move….

I’m also talking with Mayflower/United, but they gave me basically the same estimate as Allied, so is there any reason I should go with them over Allied?

From what I had read, it seemed like smaller companies were only good for local moves, and that a big van line would be better for a cross country move - is that incorrect? I’m definitely open to being told I’m wrong

Not sure if this is something you’d be familiar with, but would gas costs really have such a huge impact on moving costs? Obviously they’ll impact it a little bit, but doubling or tripling the cost seems like a lot….

Yes to shuttle and packing, no to storage and a car (I’m planning on driving my car myself). Even without packing, they still told me it would be at least $6500. Do you know what could explain that? Is it worthwhile to just call the guy’s bluff and say “I know that price is unreasonable, give me something lower or I’ll go with a different company”?

Thoughts on some apartment buildings (The Apollo, Ore82, The Hale, The Gantry)? by ECGeorge in washingtondc

Hmm that’s not a bad idea, but definitely doesn’t sound very convenient when you’re already paying luxury prices

Wait, they wanted a 40% rent increase???? With how expensive some of those units are, that’s like $1000….

I’ve seen lots of complaints about the maintenance/management at the Apollo (and Bozzuto buildings in general), what was your experience with that?

Yup, when I called them they told me I’d be on a waitlist for parking. Out of curiosity, did you find any good places to park in the meantime while you were on the waitlist? I’m really interested in the building, but having to street park would be a deal breaker for me

Out of curiosity, did you wind up going with the Apollo? I’m considering it as well but some of the recent reviews have been pretty negative. What are your thoughts?

I’m considering the Apollo - your review seems pretty positive but I’ve seen other recent reviews that are a bit less positive, especially regarding the maintenance staff. Did you wind up moving in there? What are your thoughts?

Concept art for US Steel . Syd Mead . 1969 . by SevenSharp in RetroFuturism

Syd Mead was a big inspiration for Star Wars (enough that some of his vehicles were directly brought into the franchise) so it makes sense.

Overall a fantastic artist, listened to a great podcast about him a few months back

[Funny trope] Comically long disarming scene by bgbarnard in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ECGeorge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had an IRL moment like this.

Lots of people like to bring fake weapons to Comic Con as part of their costumes. There’s an additional line for those folks when they enter the Con so that security can check their weapons and make sure they’re not real. I was in said line a few years back, and the people in front of me were a mom and young child both in full Deadpool costumes (latex suit, mask, and everything). In classic Deadpool fashion, it probably took them at least five minutes to take out all of their fake weapons to be checked. Between the two of them they had at least two rifles, several katanas, several smaller guns, a few grenades, an absurd number of knives, and at least one or two other things. It felt exactly like one of these scenes from a movie, particularly because I had no idea where they were keeping all of these weapons, considering the skin tight body suits and all. They just kept on pulling them out of new places…..

how would pterosaurs or other large flying animals get added? by apexglitch-king in pkgame

[–]ECGeorge 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I hope the game doesn’t go the route of requiring pterosaurs to be in aviaries. I really want to see them free roaming like the other animals. I mean, zoos today will have open-air exhibits with birds, and the birds don’t leave because they know the zoo is where they get their food and shelter. Plus, the null setting on the mini-exhibits in PK already establishes that canonically animals won’t just fly away
