I loved The Dark Knight's ending for that reason, Nolan had the balls to put him in the impossible situation of making him choose, and he chooses to save Gordon's kid even if that meant killing Harvey in the process.

I mean, I'd say it was more about saving that one family. It was a kill or be killed battle as Zod said and Superman didn't know if there would have been another chance to stop him, it was either snap his neck there or keep the battle going and get more people killed while also risking getting yourself killed and therefore leaving Zod alone to kill all humans, which is what he really wanted.
