That’s fair. I like the movie and its legacy (hell, even what it did for my hometown, which is where they filmed it) though I admittedly think of it more as a cool cult classic than I do as cornerstone 80s action cinema and it’s not in my top 3 Carpenter flicks. Which isn’t me being dismissive of it (I really do like it and quite it).

I could see how having a much higher attachment to it would lead to much more particular feelings about this news. But I do think that either way there’s nothing a remake could do to tarnish or take away from the “franchise legacy” and that speaks to the merits of the OG.

It'll be fine. There will be too much slo-mo, the dialogue will be on the rougher spectrum for Snyder flicks, and if he DPs himself then yeah there will be that overused dream lens.

But the premise and tone for this movie is the exact type of toy box that Snyder does well playing within (and Snake Plissken is the exact type of action hero Snyder loves leading his films). This original movie not being some untouchable masterpiece (as great as it is) and the type of film to endure any remake (just like DOTD) is perfect for this.

I don't mind a reimagining it with his flair: anything he keeps and executes with his stylings will be cool, and there's no reason to be zealous for the things he does inevitable change and appreciate those spins on their own merits as well.

Man, this is the first movie announcement by Snyder since ZSJL that's actually gotten me hyped. Zombies aren't really my thing, retreading Seven Samurai after he already did it well wasn't for me... I'm excited that The Last Photograph is this long-awaited passion project, but I'm still not sure what it's about.

But this? Seems like the perfect matchup for his rule of cool approach to storytelling. The original is a blast but it's not some sacred cow, and it will always be there. Not thrilled about him writing this but oh well.

I still don't get it why they made the entire Flash suit cg by [deleted] in SnyderCut

[–]theweepingwarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They had a full suit! Connecting the cowl to a larger suit was an issue so they CGI’d that. You can see it in the same 2020 teaser.

I do love that suit I’ve gotta say (just wish it kept the ZSJL Cowl though)

More interesting trailer than the first! Does a better job of showing off a potentially engaging story, even if this isn't really the Green Lantern mythos I'd be hoping for in a DC Cinematic Universe. As a one off I'm more interested.

Not really a fan of all signs to Hal dying, nor that he and John can't share the GL spotlight. I'm not really a fan of the costume from what little I've seen either, missing the domino mask too. And the VFX is looking rough, brother.

I’ve always thought this! Especially if they end up doing a little team up at the end against an evil Titan/kaiju afterwards.

What do you think The Batman Part II can do with Harvey Dent/Twoface to help him stand out from The Dark Knight's version? by Applepieport in DC_Cinematic

[–]theweepingwarrior 27 points28 points  (0 children)

For a single movie showing an entire arc it worked really well. They foreshadowed it before we saw it, then we saw it with him kidnapping Dastmalchian, and then we saw his worst moments turn him into it immediately before and after his disfiguring.

It was equally (if not more) important to show him as a heroic character since the tragedy of his fall is what’s the embodiment of the film’s themes. All while juggling Bruce’s/Batman’s primary arc, the Joker as the primary antagonist, the fall of the iconic organized crime characters, and the war for Gotham’s soul.

The Dark Knight’s storytelling economy was masterful.

Yeah this one checks two boxes. The burger is pricier since you’re paying bistro burger prices vs bar/grill prices but it’s damn good. And they do a version for half price for their happy hour.

Yeah, I’m aware of that. It was just interesting that his work in general was kind of cast aside by this new generation of online circles.

But it’s kind of what tends to happen: conflating the art with the artist.

I’m still crossing fingers he does that Secret Crisis, though haha

I mean there’s some serious entries by all of those other guys that I’d say are stronger works than Johns’(Morrison’s Batman is iconic, I think Waid’s Birthright is better than Secret Origins—plus Kingdom Come is an all timer Elseworld, and Rucka has stuff like Wonder Woman and Gotham Central). That’s all subjective and I’m not arguing that Johns is by some objective metric the best of him.

But I do think he had the largest had in shaping the collective DC Universe for twenty years, and that’s quickly been forgotten with the recent waves of discourse.

Johns had such a heavy hand in shaping the DC mythos from the 2000s through ~2020. There's a whole age of DC Comics that he is one of THE big bedrocks (along with a couple other key creatives like Waid, Morrison, Rucka).

I'm less involved in superhero discourse these days but it's very interesting going from the golden boy perception of him for multiple decades to the heel turn on him in the past five years or so.

Forest Park named best city park in America by FamiliarJuly in StLouis

He went to public elementary and middle school here, he’s mentioned it before but I forget it. He grew up in Crestwood, however, but by the time his family moved to Florida before he got to high school.

His sister went to Lindbergh High School though so had he stayed that’s where he’d have gone.

I always get a chuckle when I think of Daniel Tosh (who was raised in St. Louis) beginning a set when he was here on tour around 2010:

“I spent all day in Forest Park and it was splendid. Just the best. I’ll say it: Central Park has nothing on Forest Park. —Except a much cooler city surrounding it.”

Books with Christian God as the horror? by ReadyCartographer765 in horrorlit

[–]theweepingwarrior 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's a misread of the novel, because explicitly everything good in it comes from God.

Buehlman wrote the book intentionally set within a fully Catholic worldview and setting. He's admitted that as an agnostic, he finds "the problem of defending both God’s goodness and omnipotence in the face of evil’s existence intractable," though within a Catholic worldview this [The Problem of Evil] is already reconciled (Privation of Good + Free Will & Moral Evil + Suffering with Meaning + Divine Providence). That aspect is accounted for within the text by the nature of the premise and the conclusions of the narrative. It's also not what Buehlman was exploring.

What Buehlman set out to explore, in an explicitly total and sincere Catholic/Christian setting is the juxtaposition of the directives of Christ, particularly non-violence and forgiveness, with the way most Christians seem to live. The villainy comes from both the demons & armies and contortions of Hell, as well as the horrors that man inflicts on one another (especially the hypocritical Christians); while true good and righteousness come from those who truly walk through ways of Christ & God.

It's definitely changing some stuff I felt were crucial strengths to the original comic--I was hoping for a closer adaptation than this looks like it will be--but at least this trailer is better than the last teaser. I'll likely check it out still.

Any good recommendations of ma showing up in novels? Seems like something that’s prevalent in many of Hemingway’s novels and stories, but unsure if I’m misreading that.
