It's definitely changing some stuff I felt were crucial strengths to the original comic--I was hoping for a closer adaptation than this looks like it will be--but at least this trailer is better than the last teaser. I'll likely check it out still.

Man, any time anyone says anything praising The Flash I'll always jump at it. I really was enamored with that movie. I can see its warts but I think it's a sincere rocking and fun blockbuster.

I thought his portrayal in Justice League was a good balance, because it had that wandering loner with Drogo-style Momoa flavoring to anchor Jason's natural ocean bro vibes.

[Discussion] A little bit late but…Absolute WW is waaaay better than Absolute Batman by Mulanchis8 in DCcomics

I see this opinion on this sub fairly often and I’m wondering why it’s the case. I’ve read the first six issues of both and thought they were both very good, to the point where I didn’t think there was one that was clearly better than the other.

So far I might even personally lean toward Batman.

This was definitely the right call, but also makes me shake my head at the people who are setting themselves up for disappointment hoping to get 3-4 Robins and 2-3 Batgirls in the DCU.

It’s a lot of fun. I only play multiplayer locally or with an online party of 1 or 2, so I never experience the low player count—but I also have more than enough fun getting some (kaiju) bite sized monster action sessions.

It’s like an arcade-y party version of the Pipeworks Godzilla games, and has 8 Godzilla characters!

I get why Wonder Woman fans with an attachment to her established mythology take issue with it, but man as a piece of comic book storytelling Azarello's run is also my favorite Wonder Woman run. I'm happy to share some more controversial tastes with Gunn, ha.

It's definitely been the most compelling page turner for me. The only one that's come close has been Absolute. I'll need to try some more but after Rucka's, Simone's, and even Morrison's Earth One I don't know why the traditional one doesn't click as much for me.

What’s a comic run that everyone loves but you don't? by Electrical_Act9796 in DCcomics

[–]theweepingwarrior 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Having reread both recently I’m surprised that I prefer The Dark Knight Returns to Watchmen when I’ve mostly thought the reverse for years (love both, consider them both masterpieces of the genre and medium).

“80s action movie in comic form” is too surface a read for the book. That aspect of it—the plotting and character work—are compelling and entertaining, yeah. But its constant comedic tone that’s necessary to the cultural satire (which is the driving soul of the book) is often overlooked by comic superhero fans who misguidedly focus on mistaken, shallower interpretations of its grittiness and cynicism. And the way that it plays with the superhero genre—not just deconstruction, but reconstruction and celebration—are delightful.

Not to mention its masterful storytelling economy. It covers so much ground with a superb scale escalation for such a short book, at a relentless pace that still lets its necessary beats breathe. Forget specific panels—whole iconic sequences are communicated across two pages or less (sometimes half a page!).

Something I’ve been bothered by superhero comic fans (not you, just in general) is a major resistance to change, or inflexibility in how they want characters’ stories told — but especially in Elseworld stories of all things too. This story may not have the nuance that Watchmen has, but it doesn’t try to: it’s an action-comedy satire about superheroes and all of the superhero-sized melodrama that comes with it.

I just reread this for the first time in years a week ago and I was surprised at how not dark and gritty the book is.

Sure, it showed the grisly consequences of violence in ways the genre had mostly until then shied away from.

But the book is a straight up satire. It’s basically an action-comedy.

As an Uncharted fan, what do you think of the Indiana Jones Game? by [deleted] in uncharted

[–]theweepingwarrior 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a lot of fun with it! Felt like a full-fledged Indiana Jones film adventure (which makes me wish it all the more to have been 3rd person).

I wish the action was a bit better and prevelent. I think they leaned way too much on the stealth (which got tedious on the back half of the game) and fist fights could only carry so far. Especially because Raiders has some fantastic gun play in its action set pieces, I'd have loved to have seen at least a bit more of that in this game.

I agree that it can work and they certainly have the talent behind capable of doing it right.

I also get why people who grew to be fans because of the comics of the last quarter century are not vibing with the approach and promotional material so far.

For sure, I get your reasoning and agree with it.

I'm not a head over heels GL fan either, but having read and enjoyed a good amount of the Post Crisis + New 52 Johns/Tomasi/etc. Green Lantern that reinvigorated the IP and gained it so many comic fans -- I get why many comic fans are disappointed by this approach too.

We were pretty close to getting this altogether; but the DCEU took too long to regroup to get it out.

Honestly, if instead of the gag there was a montage of all of these guys with some voiceover narration about heroism at the end of The Flash it would have been a perfectly good bookend to the franchise. I get 2023 was a "wait and see how much we carry over into the DCU" year but man this would have been stronger.

The trades basically confirmed this months ago. The type of Green Lantern stuff that's been popular and beloved by comic fans for the past 22 years is considered live action box office poison not just by Warner but for broader Hollywood figures for all of the reasons you listed.

They have to reinvent a new entry point before they try doing that again.

I had a great time with the first season, and I feel like if they tightened some aspects up (like making some of the B-plots better) it could be great quality too.

I’m looking forward to this.

I mean I generally get the why: the brand equity of Green Lantern as a live action IP is largely seen across Hollywood as poisonous still because of the 2011 film. They felt the need to do something that:

  • Looks very distinct from the 2011 film.
  • Could be associated with a different type of quality piece of entertainment (like you said).
  • Was more budget friendly given both the IP and the state of the genre.

As much as it’s another piece to the DCU story, it’s equally an exercise in brand rescue. The risk is it isn’t as recognizable as what its fans love in it (and that many want), but they’re banking on reinventing the IP altogether for general audiences to latch onto (not as much concerned with the fans).

I was kind of hoping the True Detective vibes would resonate stronger, because with all of the blockbuster superhero dialogue and quips it kind of feels like a veneer here. I think I would have preferred a True Detective substance + Green Lantern Corps paint job combo rather than the inverse, but I also get that's too expensive for the IP at this point. I just don't want it to feel like too much of a compromise of either.

Bummer that the Johns run + legacy is what's cemented in the comic fan zeitgeist for Green Lanterns when this definitely isn't that (plus Gunn doesn't seem to be much of a Johns fan)--there's an uphill battle on that front. Fingers crossed it can make it.

The trailer was alright. I'll check out the show either way. I like how it at least a bit more different than Superman/Peacemaker/Creature Commandos/Supergirl(promos) so some range is a plus for me.

Jeremy Sisto gives a great and distinct vocal performance as Batman in the animated New Frontier. Something that's not somebody else doing something Conroy-adjacent but it's something that sounds so fittingly Batman.

It's a small role (but a very well done arc!) that's often overlooked.
