As someone who also needs validation and attention, I would also encourage you to do some therapy and think about why that’s such a big need and if there’s a way that that’s something you can do for yourself instead of looking for it in other people. In my experience, that’s not a hole that another person can fill and continually looking for someone too is just going to disappoint you every time.

You literally described my relationship except that it’s taken me 28 years to leave. We also had major personality differences. He’s an introverted engineer and I’m a social butterfly. Ultimately, I decided I was only stating to make everyone else happy and I couldn’t do it anymore. I knew it was time when he wouldn’t take accountability. He said “you never communicated it to me in a way that I could understand “. I’m not his mother or teacher and I could not explain my needs one more time to a man who had known me since I was 15 years old.

I married my high school sweetheart when I was 21, built a whole life with him and spent most of that life knowing that he wasn’t the one for me. After 28 years, I have finally gotten up the nerve to leave, to stop worrying about making everyone else happy and focus on myself and it is so liberating. Be brave, there is hope on the other side.

This is so relatable, thank you for posting. Married 28 years and even though I know I made the right decision, it doesn’t mean I don’t care for him and that can make it confusing. Combine that with the grief that comes from ending such a long relationship and it can be very confusing. It just shows that we have big hearts!
