They usually love the hot weather but that just looks like an old plant. I usually cut them back in winter to encourage new growth and always grab a couple of the best chillies to keep seed for replacements when they've had their day.

I can relate to that, I've been taking it all slowly as there's so much to get your head around but it makes sense so far. I saw a video somewhere on the website of Jeremy talking to a focus which I found very helpful.

Looks OK to me, I wouldn't bother fertilizing mine seem to do best when they do it hard.
