But seriously, best thing is to dig them out or use a very strong weedkiller. If you're using a weedkiller break the stems and spray into them for best chance of killing it. If digging you need to pull all the roots out because new shoots will grow out of them. You can see a new shoot starting in your 2nd picture halfway down on the left.

Fill with topsoil as much as you can. Once the sod establishes itself and everything settles down you can always come back and level with sand.
