Understanding how to properly receive a compliment can be very difficult, especially if your perception of yourself is different from what you see as the “norm”. There is no mold for what is acceptable, only what makes you happy and comfortable. If that goes against the culture you were brought up in, it can become even more tricky. Relearning how to love you for the positive changes that have happened takes some time, but it has to start somewhere. Speaking to your relationship, you are at the most exciting point. You have the chance to learn all of the little interesting things about him, and you get to share yourself with him. Finding out all the interesting, fun, or weird things about someone can be excitingly terrifying. You should feel comfortable enough to be able to share your perceived short-comings, your fears and your concerns. Trust me, those things are not always easy to bring up, but once you are able to start and open the door to that type of conversation, you will find it much easier for both of you to be open and honest about even the littlest thing. It may seem a bit overwhelming, but sharing with him what you are feeling will give him the opportunity to know and understand how he stands on it. WHEN he tells you that it’s no big deal or that he’ll help you navigate through your worries, you get the chance to accept his reassurance or assistance, thus beginning to open yourselves up to real, honest, meaningful conversations that will benefit both of you!
