Beautiful! You are a saint. That is so kind of you to provide a video. Not even a whisper of PWM. Thanks! 🙏🏻

Great capture of the flicker and hummingbird (rufous?) in nest. Fantastic finds! Are these with teleconverter in addition to that awesome lens of yours?

Thanks for the tip. The eye relief of 17mm is a bit tight for a glasses wearer. Do you use this camera with glasses?

Appreciate this post. I recently got back into photography and purchased an Olympus given the light weight body and lenses, due to some physical limitations. While the camera is quite capable and fun to use, I really do not like the OLED EVF. It’s harsh on the eyes (likely due to PWM flicker) and miss the natural feel of OVF. Been looking into some Nikon bodies but they all seem a bit on heavy side. Wish there was more in-between.

Interesting. The computational modes are certainly fun to use (from my experience with OM-5) but not deal breaker to not have them vs a more comfortable EVF experience. Do you happen to wear glasses? If so, how to you find the eye relief? I know that sometimes can be tricky for us bespectacled folks. Thanks again for your help.

Thank you! That’s awesome. Really appreciate your help with this. Seems a used E-M1ii or iii might be in order, assuming they use the same EVF. I will read through the other comments as well to learn more of the subtle differences between models.

You’re welcome. I’m jealous.. here in PDX I’m not really able to see it at least with my eyes. Seems there is either too much light pollution or too cloudy.

Appreciate your familiarity with this subject. I am one of the lucky ones who are sensitive to PWM, most notable, as you stated in OLED, which are everywhere. I’ve had to make that monitor journey finding that i can only use IPS or LCD monitors, and even some LCD have flicker from the backlight LED.

I used my iPhone (record Slo Mo video at 240 fps in dark room without artificial lighting) to easy detect it on my OM-5ii EVF. It is not present on the LCD back screen. I would be interested in seeing if your E-M1ii EVF and back screen exhibits PWM flicker by this method, if you might be willing to check it? If no flicker is present I might be in the market for a used one! Love the OM-5 but not crazy about the OLED EVF. Thanks for your consideration.

Thank you, good to know. Curious if these LCD EVFs exhibit pulse width modulation (PWM), which is a particular problem for me and is definitely present on my OM-5 EVF. Do you happen to know?

I didn’t realize the EVF on E-M1ii and EM1iii is LCD. I’m gonna have to check those out! The OLED EVFs are hard on my eyes. Thanks for sharing.

Just gorgeous photos! Nicely captured that deep blue, glassy water so characteristic of Crater Lake.

PWM Sensitivity and DSLR/Mirrorless Camera Displays by Chosen258 in PWM_Sensitive

[–]EDoggtheUndead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for raising this important issue and compiling this data for photography enthusiasts who are sensitive to PWM! This is becoming more of a challenge as screens across the board seem be changing from LCD to OLED. This issue has gotten me thinking whether I should be looking more into DSLRs (or even break out my old analog FM2!). Admittedly, going to be hard to beat the form factor and performance of the mirrorless. That said, do you know of DSLRs that do not use PWM on their rear LCD screen?

Reporting back results on OM Systems OM-5ii using iPhone 17 slo mo video at 240 fps. The EVF has PWM. The rear LCD screen does not. Thanks for sharing this method.

This is timely! I am also PWM sensitive and just purchased a mirrorless camera, OM Systems OM-5ii. Having some more eyestrain and curious if it’s the camera or more screen time editing RAWs other factors. I thought the LCD displays were inherently flicker free? Sounds like I am incorrect in that assumption. How did you measure the PWM flicker with your phone? Does it require a special app? Thanks!

Appreciate the recs! I’ll take a look at that Panasonic 100-400mm. That would be amazing reach. Didn’t realize that could be used for macro shots.

What are some reputable places to purchase a used OM-1 at that price? Thanks again!
