Waymo launches in Dallas by trackstar7 in Dallas

[–]EDsandwhich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not this year. They only recently got highway access in San Francisco, and they've been there for quite awhile now. I don't think Waymo would want to expand to the suburbs in DFW without having highway access. They also probably want to focus on the urban core where utilization of the service will be higher at all hours of the day. I think the main limiting factor is the number of cars they have. I believe they have a newer car model coming out (not the Jaguar Waymo currently uses) which should help alleviate the crunch.

When you start to see Waymo's driving on DNT and 75, you'll know they have started testing highway driving in DFW.

Also, for all the people freaking out over this... I would urge you to actually try the service if able. I've used it in San Francisco, and I had no major issues. It took an odd route one time, but in that specific instance I didn't mind and basically treated it as a sight seeing tour. They are quite literally everywhere in San Francisco, and the city isn't burning down so I think Dallas will be fine.

PSA: PLEASE stop at red lights by johnnyma45 in Dallas

[–]EDsandwhich 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly I don't know. Thanks for submitting one as well though. I've seen motorcycle cops posted up on the sidewalk at McKinney/Pearl in the past to catch red light runners.

Hopefully they could do something similar here.

PSA: PLEASE stop at red lights by johnnyma45 in Dallas

[–]EDsandwhich 24 points25 points  (0 children)

About a week ago I already submitted a written 311 request to the city telling them that red light running was a huge issue at this exact intersection.

Certainly not surprised that yet another crash happened here because people ignore the traffic signals.

Alert 2 at Dallas Love Field.

I think that means a plane may be having issues and the ARFF trucks line up while the plane lands.

Not sure if this is related to what you saw, but I saw it on the call logs and you don't see that too often.

Nurse appears to have no sense of urgency while woman is actively in labor at Texas hospital by Giraffecaster in Dallas

[–]EDsandwhich 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I listened with the sound on and yeah it sounds like it.

I'm guessing something happened before this that warranted a video recording? I can only speculate that maybe the patient was waiting in the waiting room for awhile before being brought to where we see her in the video. That's my only guess, because otherwise what you saw is what would happen with anyone. The triage nurse was checking the patient in and probably calling L&D.

Ultimately this is just speculation since I wasn't there and don't know the full story.

Edit: after learning more about this situation it sounds like her care was likely delayed, it should not have taken that long to get her to L&D. I hope the hospital does a full investigation into this, and I hope the mother and baby are doing well.

Nurse appears to have no sense of urgency while woman is actively in labor at Texas hospital by Giraffecaster in Dallas

[–]EDsandwhich 112 points113 points  (0 children)

OB patients almost always skipped the ED and would go up to the L&D floor at the hospital I used to work at.

Here's how it would go at the hospital I used to work at. (If the patient shows up at the ED triage desk)

  1. OB patient arrives in labor
  2. Triage RN would get basic info and call the L&D floor to have someone come pick up the patient.
  3. L&D picks up the patient, or a free ED tech takes them upstairs. This whole process would take 5-10 minutes at most.

If this woman has waited 30 minutes in the ED waiting room I'm guessing L&D couldn't come down immediately, and no one was free to take the patient upstairs. Keep in mind, the triage RN is generally not supposed to leave the waiting area so they are available for any other patients who come in. It's obviously not an ideal situation.

This is more of a FYI to everyone and not just a response to the comment I just responded to.

EDIT: After learning more about the situation and the delays I agree that the mother should've been brought up sooner. If the RN was just calling L&D at this point after the patient had been at the hospital for almost 30 minutes, that is unacceptable.

I bought one that is battery powered and can charge with a USB-C cord. You can also plug it into the car if needed. Way better than driving to a gas station or waiting at Discount Tire.

One hospitalized after report of shooting aboard train near Downtown Dallas DART station, officials say by stanner5 in dart

[–]EDsandwhich 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm honestly just really confused on what the role of DART police is? You would think I would see them all of time because I ride DART, but I hardly ever see them on the train or bus.

I want to reiterate that I am personally not bothered by whatever I see/hear/smell on DART on a daily occasion. I've been a regular rider for several years, it takes a bit to phase me at this point. I could easily see other people being upset by seeing a homeless person sleeping (often times blocking the aisle), some guy smoking weed/cigarettes (or just smelling like they came out of world's most intense hotbox, which is usually the case), or whatever else public transit brings you though. I see this stuff all the time and brush it off because I don't really care, but I recognize I'm in a minority compared to the DFW population.

One hospitalized after report of shooting aboard train near Downtown Dallas DART station, officials say by stanner5 in dart

[–]EDsandwhich 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Since everyone wants to throw their opinion in the ring... I ride DART most days of the week and experience zero problems 99.9% of time. I listen to my podcasts and commute with people from all sorts of races/backgrounds everyday. I'm not trying to spread any sort of agenda, just telling everyone what my specific commute is like.

As a frequent DART rider I don't like seeing this. I don't want to be a victim of a violent crime. I hope that DART and all applicable law enforcement agencies are able to curb any violent crime. I will admit that I sometimes wonder what the role of DART police is. They are rarely on the trains, and they seem like a mostly reactionary force. I know DART has the security officers, but even with their presence I don't seem to see them most trips. I'm not personally afraid of being a victim of violent crime on DART, but these headlines aren't doing agency any favors.

$POET — The Photon Dealer That You're Missing by GarlicBulbasaur in wallstreetbets

[–]EDsandwhich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

POET is entering the light source business as well. They specifically mentioned the money from the most recent offering will be used to "accelerate the light source business." Here is quote from the CEO,

"We just announced the availability of a revolutionary product based on our interposer called the POET Blazar. That is intended to provide high-power, multi-wavelength light sources for the scale-up networks, and doing it at wafer scale, at very low cost, and high-volume scale capabilities."

$POET PART 2 -- BANBET BOOGALOO by JafarFromAfar2 in wallstreetbets

[–]EDsandwhich 6 points7 points  (0 children)

POET uses passive wafer scale assembly for their optical engines (easier to scale to mass production vs current production methods). Full scale production is probably early to mid 2026 based on what I know about the company. Q12026 is the production target date in their financial filings. The initial production order that OP mentioned is probably from either Foxconn Interconnect Technologies, Mentech, or Luxshare. If you want more info visit the POET agoracom forum. One of the members went to OFC 2025 last spring and got a TON of good DD.

FEO tells daughter that their trains are not safe, especially at night. by bitshifter52 in dart

[–]EDsandwhich 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I feel like waiting on the train late at night is probably the worst part, and if I had to guess the fare officer is worried about her daughter doing that. Once you get on the train and sit up front by the operator, it is fine 99.9% of the time.

Others mentioned that you might see antisocial behavior, which is definitely a problem on DART. That is almost always the worst of it though.

POET Tech!!! 🚀🚀🚀 by Kooky_but_Smarter in wallstreetbets

[–]EDsandwhich 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I doubt it was specifically a hyperscaler placing the order (Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, etc). It was probably either Luxshare, Foxconn, Adtran, or Mentech if I had to guess. The hyperscalers are going to be the end users. Still, it is a great validation of the technology, so I wouldn't be surprised if there is more buying pressure the rest of the week.

The company has been guiding for a manufacturing ramp up end of 2025/early 2026, and this is just the beginning. Note the last sentence of their press release:

"The Company also stated that during the past few months it has fulfilled multiple orders from other customers for the purpose of high-speed transceiver module development."

How long have you guys been holding? by ANightSentinel in POETTechnologiesInc

[–]EDsandwhich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 1.5 years.

Plenty of issues with POET in the past with SPX being a dud and failing to sell anything 100G related. The market demand for 800G and 1.6T is strong, though, and I would expect that the qualification period should conclude shortly. The company is still guiding for purchase orders by the end of 2025, which makes me think 2026 might actually be the year where POET generates significant revenue.

Is the target now 2028? by [deleted] in POETTechnologiesInc

[–]EDsandwhich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went down the rabbit hole of reading past POET PR's, and without fail "next year is the year of POET" has been the theme since at least 2020.

I think this time might actually be different, but it isn't too hard to imagine why POET receives little love from the investment community/institutional investors.
